Ares

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 4 years

Ares was initially a very insecure dog and quite overwhelmed with the new situation at the animal shelter. Nowadays, he has thawed out. While he is still somewhat skeptical around some strangers, he is fortunately very good at being convinced with treats that people don’t mean him any harm. In everyday life, Ares has shown to be rather skittish so far; at loud noises or a loud voice, he ducks down immediately. Therefore, we are looking for a relatively quiet household for the sensitive male dog with people who can provide him with sufficient security. His adopters will still need to work with Ares on his basic training. Here, it can be helpful that the male dog is very eager to eat. The bond to people is currently still missing; Ares is more interested in his environment and therefore also runs very uncoordinated on the leash. Especially when other dogs are in sight, he gets excited and can also pull quite a bit on the leash. As a German Shepherd, it is naturally equally important for Ares to be mentally challenged. He needs a task, ideally something where he can continuously grow in his challenges and thus strengthen his self-confidence. Ares shows to be compatible with female dogs, but a suitability as a second dog would have to be checked on an individual basis. His compatibility with other cats or small animals is unfortunately not known. If you are interested in one of our dogs, please contact us preferably by email. Describe in the email how the dog will live with you and send us a phone number. Then a staff member will contact you. Dog descriptions are based on observations at the animal shelter or information from third parties and do not represent guaranteed characteristics.

About Ares

What life with Ares looks like

Ares is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Leipzig in Leipzig.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires quiet household, fearful of loud noises and voices, needs basic training and confidence building

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ares, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ares?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Leipzig handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ares on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ares if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Leipzig will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ares already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ares isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Leipzig early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ares and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
