Adopt Taco

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

Taco is a very insecure dog. He shows himself to be fearful and very jumpy in everyday interactions. Therefore, our Taco urgently needs a quiet home, both in the household itself and in a quiet, more rural environment, and not in an urban setting. There should ideally be no children in the household. Prospective owners must be aware that the getting-to-know-you phase with Taco will take longer than with human-reared dogs. Once he has gained trust, the mixed-breed male dog shows himself to be friendly and approachable to those he trusts. It should still be understood, however, that it does not help Taco if he is pitied and wrapped up, but that he instead needs to be given a lot of security. It should be considered that he has had little training so far and thus a lot of time and effort will need to be invested. We think that a prospective adopter of Tacos should already have some experience with insecure dogs. Attending dog training classes would also make sense. Taco gets along with other dogs conditionally; he has been housed with female dogs and also with male dogs at our animal shelter. However, there are also fellow animals that he cannot stand. Nevertheless, we think that Taco would be better suited as a single dog. His compatibility with other cats or small animals is unknown. If you are interested in one of our dogs, contact us preferably by email. Describe in the email how the dog will live with you and send us a phone number. Then a staff member will contact you. Dog descriptions are based on observations at the animal shelter or on information from third parties and do not represent guaranteed characteristics.

About Taco

What life with Taco looks like

Taco is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Leipzig in Leipzig.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires quiet rural environment, experienced owner for fearful behavior, extended socialization period

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Taco, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Taco?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Leipzig handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Taco on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Taco if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Leipzig will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Taco already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Taco isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Leipzig early rather than rehoming privately; they know Taco and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
