Tiko

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

In April 2023, our friends in Linares received a call. A driver had seen a hurt or dead dog by the roadside and asked the animal welfare workers to take care of the accident victim. Of course, the rescuers immediately went to the scene of the accident and found Tiko by the roadside. The 3-year-old male dog was unable to move; he had an open fracture of the femur and, naturally, the little Podenco was desperate. Carefully, our partners placed their new rescue in the car and took him to the veterinary clinic. Tiko had to undergo a long and difficult operation to set his fracture. After Tiko left the clinic, he moved to a foster home with experienced and loving supporters of ArcoNatura. Tiko is a very grateful and brave companion. He has tolerated all treatments from the beginning, has tirelessly fought to learn how to walk again - and has learned how to be properly pampered and cared for. Tiko can now walk without pain, plays again with other dogs, and goes on the couch by himself to nap during his favorite shows. He is three years old and still young enough to have a good chance that he will not have any major problems with his leg anymore, but there are no guarantees. Accordingly, we are looking for people who are aware of Tiko's history and pay attention to the fact that the now so cheerful male dog does not jump or climb too much. Moderate sport and targeted mobilization of his joints is certainly positive - and thus training with Tiko can become a great leisure activity for both human and animal. Our red bat-eared one is smart and clingy, Tiko is calm and balanced and loves to learn. If you love long walks, even more so snuggling on the couch, if you are quite active but don't want to run the next marathon in under three hours and need a training partner, if you don't expect a playmobile to come into your house and can live with the fact that your dog spends a lot of time lying decoratively by the balcony door or on the windowsill (Podencos are almost more cat than dog in this regard), and if you have already fallen for Tiko's round eyes, then we would love to hear from you. Tiko is more than ready for a fresh start as a beloved family dog!

DE·Show original

About Tiko

What life with Tiko looks like

Tiko is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tiko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tiko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tiko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tiko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tiko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tiko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tiko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
