Tinkerbell

Maltese · Female · Adult · 5 years

Tinkerbell has come to us from a breeder and has never lived in a home before, so she is understandably unsure and very sensitive to touch. She can go into panic mode if handled too quickly and may try to nip out of fear as she is simply terrified and trying to protect herself. The initial handling is what scares her most, so patience and slow, careful introductions are essential. Since being with us, Tinkerbell has begun to settle into a routine and is starting to show small but very encouraging signs of progress. While she is still too worried to accept touch and may move away if approached, she is becoming more comfortable being around people she knows. She will now approach to sniff fingers, gently take treats, and has even started to offer little kisses, which is a lovely sign that she is beginning to build trust. She is also happy to relax nearby, often choosing to lie close by, which shows she is starting to feel a little safer in our presence. Tinkerbell has made particularly good progress with being picked up. This used to be extremely stressful for her, but she is now becoming more tolerant of this with calm and gentle handling, which is a huge step forward for her. She will still need a very experienced, adult-only home with people who have handled terrified or highly sensitive dogs before. Tinkerbell will also need a kind, confident resident dog to guide her and help her feel more secure. Her adopters will need to understand that she may never be a typical dog who seeks constant cuddles or fuss, but with patience, love, and gentle guidance, she can form a very special bond. As she has never experienced home life, Tinkerbell will need continued support with house training and learning to walk on a lead. Starting with calm, gentle garden time will help her confidence as she gradually explores her new environment. Tinkerbell was recently groomed and found the experience very stressful, so it will be important for her adopters to gently and patiently help her build positive associations through gradual desensitisation. She will need regular grooming to keep her comfortable, and her new family should be prepared to work with an experienced, understanding groomer or may need to look at having her groomed under sedation until she becomes more comfortable with this. Tinkerbell is a very special girl who needs an equally special home willing to invest time, TLC, and understanding. With consistency, patience, and love, she has the potential to form a unique bond and thrive in a safe, nurturing environment. Tinkerbell has a travel document. This dog can be homed with a resident dog.

About Tinkerbell

What life with Tinkerbell looks like

Tinkerbell is a extra-large adult maltese dog waiting at Many Tears Animal Rescue in Llanelli.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Extreme fear and touch sensitivity from breeder background, requires very experienced handlers, adult-only home, never lived in home before

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tinkerbell, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tinkerbell?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Many Tears Animal Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tinkerbell on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tinkerbell if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Many Tears Animal Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tinkerbell already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tinkerbell isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Many Tears Animal Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tinkerbell and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
