Toca neu Ava

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 5 years

Country of origin: Hungary The adorable dog siblings Toca and her brother Foca arrived at the Menhely on July 14, 2021, thanks to a Hungarian animal welfare activist who had rescued them from a high-risk neighborhood. They were spared a terrible life, and the shelter was asked to find them a loving home. There was also another brother, who unfortunately passed away. Unfortunately, Toca and Foca struggled immensely with the shelter environment and hid themselves between the doghouse and the wall. Shelter employee Tibi took them under his care, but they were so intimidated and frightened by the noise and hustle of the shelter that they made very little progress. They felt overwhelmed and insecure, compounded by the fact that they hadn't had a good start in life and first had to learn that there are also kind people out there. They need time, understanding, and patience to build trust. A calm environment can be extremely helpful in this process. Their new owners must provide them with security and guide them step by step through the everyday aspects of life. One mustn't treat them with pity; instead, one should take them by the "paw" and show them the bright side of life, gradually introducing them to more and more experiences. They still have much to learn about the basics of dog behavior. The two get along well with other dogs, and having a confident second dog could be a great help for them as they settle into their new life. In January 2022, Toca was allowed to move to a foster home in Switzerland and was subsequently rehomed. Unfortunately, due to personal reasons, Toca is now looking for a new home again—Ava. Report from June 23, 2026: "Ava is a friendly, energetic dog who meets people and children openly and affectionately. She gets along well with other dogs but can sometimes be a bit boisterous. At home, she shows herself to be calm, peaceful, and content. As soon as the doorbell rings or visitors arrive, she briefly announces their presence loudly. Afterwards, she always behaves politely and unobtrusively toward guests. Ava is generally easy to recall and knows common commands. She particularly enjoys nose work and search games—both indoors and outdoors. Puzzle toys and balls filled with treats excite her just as much as ball games and frisbee throws. Walks with Ava are pleasant; she likes to trot ahead briskly and explore her surroundings attentively. Ava is a sensitive and rather insecure dog who benefits from a calm, structured daily routine. She feels especially comfortable in a reliable environment with clear routines and can fully express her loving nature. During fireworks, loud noises, or severe thunderstorms, Ava seeks the proximity of her caregivers and a protected retreat that gives her a sense of security. Car rides still pose a challenge for Ava. She finds it difficult to relax during trips, whether short or long. Ava is very cuddly and loves being close to her people. She forms a strong bond and places great trust in her caregivers. Security, safety, and loving attention are especially important to her and are rewarded with great devotion." Medical update from July 2026: Toca, now renamed Ava, has often scratched herself intensely, and her eyes have also been a cause for concern. She has since been examined by a veterinarian, who prescribed her medication for a skin allergy. Her condition has improved significantly since then, and she has also been recommended a special shampoo. An appointment with an eye specialist is still pending; an update on this will follow.

About Toca neu Ava

What life with Toca neu Ava looks like

Toca neu Ava is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Animal Happyend in Animal Happyend.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Toca neu Ava, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Toca neu Ava?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Animal Happyend handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Toca neu Ava on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Toca neu Ava if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Animal Happyend will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Toca neu Ava already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Toca neu Ava isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Animal Happyend early rather than rehoming privately; they know Toca neu Ava and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
