Tom

English Setter · Male · Adult · 4 years

My story: Here’s Tom, a 4-year-old English Setter who arrived at the shelter after being removed due to mistreatment. Tom is a very endearing, affectionate, and energetic dog. He gets along well with most of his canine companions. However, we’re not sure how he’ll behave around cats. Like all English Setters, he needs daily physical exercise: running, exploring, and following scent trails are essential for his well-being. He has no trouble with car rides, and he’s perfectly house-trained. My personality: Unfortunately, Tom suffered from mistreatment before his arrival. This has left some lingering effects on his behavior. He finds it hard to cope with being alone and can panic when left completely by himself. Ideally, he’d be adopted into a home where another dog could keep him company during absences—and having an attentive, present adopter would be a real plus for him. On walks, Tom gets very excited when he encounters other dogs. Likes / Dislikes: On the other hand, he remains wary around certain adults, especially those carrying a stick (such as a hiking pole) or riding bicycles. Children, by contrast, seem to impress him much less. Tom will need a patient, energetic, and confident person to continue his training—especially to help him better manage his enthusiasm and learn to channel his energy more effectively. We’re looking for a kind, committed family that’s fully aware of this breed’s needs and ready to give Tom plenty of time, stability, and fun activities every day. With patience, gentleness, and a reassuring environment, Tom will become a loyal, endearing companion full of joy and zest for life.

About Tom

What life with Tom looks like

Tom is a adult english setter dog waiting at APAA Trégrom in France.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇫🇷Adopting from France

French refuges follow the SPA framework: adopters sign a cession contract that includes sterilization, vaccinations, microchip identification, and rabies passport. Fees are typically €150–€300. Many refuges work with rescue transport partners for cross-border placements.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tom, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tom?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. APAA Trégrom handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tom on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tom if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — APAA Trégrom will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tom already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tom isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with APAA Trégrom early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tom and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FR). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
