Tom

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 7 years

Tom (born 2019) is a handsome, sturdy mixed-breed male who clearly shows how much he actually seeks contact with people, and how hard it is for him at the same time to take that step. He stands still in the room, makes cautious eye contact, and seems inwardly torn. The wish for closeness is there, but the final push is still missing. Even especially coveted treats cannot currently dissolve this inner block. Tom does not show any panicked fear, though. He doesn't hide away, shows no defensive behavior, and remains relatively present. It is more as if he stands still and simply cannot move forward. Perhaps it was too many impressions, too many unfamiliar people, or unfamiliar situations. Tom needs time and distance to feel safe. His kennel neighbor was already able to leave in the summer, and since then Tom has lived alone in his kennel. For a dog with his sensitive, thoughtful nature, this isolation is particularly hard. During our visit, Tom was not pressured. He was given space, calm, and the opportunity to decide for himself. Perhaps at the next meeting he will already be a little bit braver, because the potential for that is clearly within him. For Tom we are looking for competent, empathetic people who can read his signals, give him security, and place no expectations on quickly "functioning." An experienced foster home or a calm home with dog experience would be the first step into a different life. Tom is neutered and will be vaccinated, microchipped, and placed with a protection contract after a positive pre-adoption check. General note about our dogs: Our dogs in Romania are visited regularly so that we can continually reassess their behavior and development. These personal impressions help us greatly in presenting each individual dog as accurately as possible. However, we would like to point out that a dog may show itself differently in a new environment, with new people, new routines, and new impressions. This is completely normal and part of every process of change. Many dogs even open up faster at home and show sides that were not visible at the shelter. Our assessments are therefore based on current observations but are not a guarantee of any particular behavior in a new environment. They are meant to provide orientation and show how the dog presents itself at the shelter, and what potential lies within it. We are convinced that with patience, understanding, and a loving environment, every dog can find its way and continue to develop positively.

Tom (geb.

About Tom

What life with Tom looks like

Tom is an adult mixed breed dog waiting at Vierbeiner in Not e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tom, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tom?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Vierbeiner in Not e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tom on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tom if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Vierbeiner in Not e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Tom already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tom isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Vierbeiner in Not e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tom and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
