Adopt Tom

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Gray snout, brown bear fur, stumpy tail, loyal gaze – that is our Tom. And yes, Tom is not the youngest anymore and he is also no cute little lap dog. And yet, Tom counts among the soul dogs that deeply touch our hearts. Fate has imposed a hard test upon them, they have struggled through life, never becoming unfriendly, hoping and ultimately even trusting. Yes, that is the kind of dog our Tom is. And now we want to find a home for this dear treasure. Finally, because he has so deserved it.Tom was rejected by his former owner. The reasons are unknown to us. So the dog wandered through the city for many months, observed by numerous people, some even feeding him scraps. One day, an animal welfare worker worked on a volunteer basis discovered him. After observing Tom for some time, he decided to catch him and bring him to safety. But this proved more difficult than expected. First, he tried to find out where Tom spent his nights. A fixed sleeping place could not be found. Now, the animal friend tried to lure Tom with food. But the reserved male dog kept backing away. In the meantime, eight long months had passed since Tom was first sighted. Others would have given up, but the brave animal welfare worker had long noticed the fine soul in this dog – and that he urgently needs help. So he did not give up and organized a live trap. He prepared it with the tastiest food, and finally, Tom could be secured. Since there was no space in the animal shelter, Tom moved to a temporary foster home with people who soon realized that this dog marked by life has not lost its trust in people. The brown bear fur shows friendliness and gratitude, and the short tail wiggles vigorously as soon as he receives some love and affection. Unfortunately, Tom cannot stay in this temporary home and he must, as soon as a place becomes available, move to the animal shelter. He must sort and arrange himself again. Our animal welfare worker, his friend and lifesaver, wishes nothing more than that Tom finally arrives, finds a home forever, people who love him and stroke his bear fur. That he finds people who consciously give an older dog a home and where he can be part of the family.

About Tom

What life with Tom looks like

Tom is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Europa in München.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tom, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tom?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Europa handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tom on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tom if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Europa will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tom already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tom isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Europa early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tom and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
