Tommy

Male · Young · 1 year

Tommy is a 1-year-old, intact male Mechelaar with an enormous, sweet heart. He’s affectionate, playful, and people-oriented—but he also needs a clear set of guidelines. For Tommy, we’re therefore not looking for an average home, but rather a consistent, loving owner who has experience with energetic, strong dogs and can guide him in a calm yet straightforward manner. More than anything, Tommy just wants to have fun, play, and enjoy life. However, sometimes this enthusiasm tends to get a bit overwhelming. When he’s left to figure out on his own how to channel his energy, his destructive side starts to surface. Leaving him unsupervised in the garden or letting him roam freely around the house is therefore out of the question. Structure, supervision, and plenty of outlets for his energy are essential for Tommy. With the right guidance, though, Tommy has tremendous potential. Indoors, if necessary, he can calmly stay in his place or lie down in his bed for extended periods. A crate or mandatory rest periods aren’t punishment for him—they’re actually important tools that help him relax and stay balanced. On walks, Tommy walks nicely at heel, but he especially loves having some space to explore the world and simply be a dog. Once a strong bond and clear relationship have been established with his owner, he listens attentively and enjoys working together. Tommy is a dog with great potential, but he needs someone who understands him, sets appropriate boundaries, and at the same time loves to cuddle, play, and go on adventures with him. For Tommy, we’re looking for someone who: is consistent and stands firm when necessary; is mentally and physically stable; has experience with high-energy, vigorous dogs; can read dog language and behavior well; enjoys playing, walking, training, and cuddling; and understands that rest, structure, and clear boundaries are essential for Tommy. Whoever can provide Tommy with the right guidance will gain a loyal, funny, and loving companion with a heart of gold.

About Tommy

What life with Tommy looks like

Tommy is a large young adult dog waiting at Dierenbescherming Mechelen in Mechelen.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tommy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tommy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenbescherming Mechelen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tommy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tommy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenbescherming Mechelen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tommy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tommy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenbescherming Mechelen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tommy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
