Tortilla

Mixed Breed Cat · Female · Young · 2 years

Tortilla was originally captured during a spaying/neutering campaign. It soon became apparent that she was pregnant. At the shelter, she was first given time to settle in and recover in peace. Several weeks later, she gave birth to four healthy kittens. Now that her kittens have grown big enough, they’re ready to move into their own homes. That’s why we’re now looking for a loving home for Tortilla herself. This lovely lady cat is clearly very comfortable around people and thoroughly enjoys their company. She loves being in their presence and actively seeks out petting and cuddles. At the same time, Tortilla knows exactly what she wants—and, more importantly, what she doesn’t want. Veterinary visits are definitely not among her favorite activities. In such situations, she clearly shows her displeasure and skillfully tries to escape through even the tiniest of openings. Since Tortilla can sometimes be a bit uncertain around loud noises or unfamiliar situations, we’d like her to go to a quiet home—preferably one without dogs and without small children. However, we could easily imagine older children who are experienced with cats. Tortilla generally gets along well with other cats. So far, she’s lived together with her kittens as well as the mother cat Salsa. Salsa, though, is rather delicate and reserved, and sometimes gets overshadowed by Tortilla’s more confident personality. If her future owners make sure to give both cats plenty of individual attention, the two could even move into their new home together.

DE·Show original

About Tortilla

What life with Tortilla looks like

Tortilla is a large young adult mixed breed cat cat waiting at Zürcher Tierschutz in Zürich.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tortilla, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tortilla?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Zürcher Tierschutz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tortilla on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tortilla if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Zürcher Tierschutz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tortilla already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tortilla isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Zürcher Tierschutz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tortilla and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
