Tucker

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 2 years

Tucker is likely a livestock guardian dog mixed breed and a typical example of a "rescued puppy from abroad," whose genetic predisposition and breed-specific needs were not recognized. Livestock guardian dogs naturally possess traits such as independence and territorial behavior – requirements that one should be aware of before adoption. The resulting overstimulation led to Tucker showing problematic behavior at a young age. When he felt his boundaries and will were not respected, he responded by showing his teeth. Walks became impossible, as there was a lack of leadership, support, and safe handling, so he lived only in the yard. Here at the animal shelter Ludwigshafen e.V., it is clear that Tucker has significant insecurities when interacting with people, especially men. He never learned to walk calmly on a leash. As soon as he cannot go in the direction he wants or if the distance to the person becomes too small, he stops and begins to howl loudly. This behavior clearly serves to create space and assert his will. Currently, Tucker is learning with us that this strategy does not lead to success and that shared walks also involve closeness and orientation towards the human. True to his breed, Tucker shows territorial behavior. He has not had any dog interactions since "his rescue," making him very insecure around fellow animals, and he needs a lot of training in this area. For Tucker, we are looking for experienced, confident people without children who are willing to work with him on a structured daily routine and show him how a stable coexistence in a household works. A rural environment would be ideal for him.

About Tucker

What life with Tucker looks like

Tucker is a young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Ludwigshafen in Ludwigshafen/Rheim.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tucker, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tucker?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Ludwigshafen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tucker on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tucker if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Ludwigshafen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tucker already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tucker isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Ludwigshafen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tucker and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
