Among the different ways to travel with your dog, one of the most comfortable is perhaps the train. You take a seat or a compartment, and while the landscape passes quickly outside the window, reading a book, listening to music, or taking a nap, you arrive at your destination without queues, traffic, or navigation errors. Certainly, the beauty of the trip also depends on how it will unfold—a journey that is too long, delays, and waiting become annoying on any means of transport—but the train still today, besides a bit of romantic charm, has a certain comfort that is appreciated even by a dog. Train transport for an animal can be less stressful than an airplane or a car, keeping in mind that it must still be prepared and pampered as in any other trip. Today, then, we see how to move with your dog on a train in our country. The Trenitalia and Italo regulations provide that small animals (dogs, cats, and other pets) can travel free of charge, placed in an appropriately sized carrier. Each passenger can carry one container or one dog without a carrier, if larger. Large or medium dogs are allowed on board, but in this case, it is necessary to pay the ticket for them as well, except for guide dogs, which always travel free of charge regardless of their size. These dogs can also access the restaurant/bar cars, something not allowed for other dogs. Dogs cannot occupy the seats of travelers, but with Italo it is possible to book, along with the ticket, also a space reserved for the animal and a welcome kit. Moreover, Italo allows dogs and cats in adoption to travel free of charge, a decision that can only please us. Returning to vacations, this summer Trenitalia promotes the Summer Experience 2023 campaign, a series of offers including the possibility of bringing animals on trains without paying, on Intercity until September 5th and on Frecce until September 15th. On regional trains, however, until October 1st 2023, the Dog in tour offer is valid, which allows buying a ticket for unlimited travel for three or five with the dog accompanying (available until September 15th 2023). As in all public transport and places, dogs must not cause damage or disturbance to travelers or other animals; medium and large dogs must be kept on a leash and a muzzle must be carried. For each dog, it is mandatory to carry the necessary documents: registration in the canine registry and health record, or the European pet passport if traveling abroad. In this case, it is advisable to check the railway company's regulations in the country where you will travel by train. What about at night? At most two dogs can be boarded, one per passenger, regardless of size, and it will be mandatory to buy the entire compartment. As can be seen, there are many possibilities and promotions aimed at four-legged friends to travel conveniently and calmly even on trains, timeless means of transport for dreamers and their dogs.

Fra i diversi modi di viaggiare insieme al proprio cane uno dei più confortevoli è forse il treno. Si prende posto su un sedile o in uno scompartimento e, mentre il paesaggio scorre veloce fuori dal finestrino, leggendo un libro, ascoltando musica o facendo un sonnellino si arriva a destinazione senza code, traffico o errori di rotta. Certo, la bellezza del viaggio dipende anche da come si svolgerà – un tragitto troppo lungo, i ritardi e le attese diventano antipatici su qualsiasi mezzo – ma il treno conserva ancora oggi, oltre a un po’ di fascino romantico, una certa comodità apprezzabile anche da un cane. Il trasporto in treno infatti per un animale può risultare meno stressante dell’aereo o della macchina, fermo restando che vada comunque preparato e coccolato come in occasione di qualsiasi altro viaggio. Oggi dunque vediamo come spostarsi con il proprio cane a bordo di un treno nel nostro paese. Il regolamento di Trenitalia e Italo prevede che gli animali di piccola taglia (cani, gatti e altri pet) possano viaggiare gratuitamente sistemati in un trasportino dalle dimensioni adeguate. Ogni passeggero può portare con sé uno solo contenitore oppure un solo cane senza trasportino, se più grande. I cani di grossa taglia o media sono infatti ammessi a bordo ma è necessario in questo caso pagare il biglietto anche per loro, a eccezione dei cani-guida che viaggiano sempre gratuitamente qualunque sia la loro taglia. Questi ultimi inoltre possono accedere ai vagoni ristorante/bar, cosa non permessa invece agli altri cani. I cani non possono occupare i posti dei viaggiatori ma con la compagnia Italo è possibile prenotare, assieme al biglietto, anche uno spazio destinato all’animale e un welcome kit. Inoltre Italo fa viaggiare gratuitamente i cani e i gatti in adozione, una decisione che non può che rallegrarci. Tornando alle vacanze, quest’estate Trenitalia promuove la campagna Summer Experience 2023, una serie di offerte tra le quali rientra la possibilità di portare gli animali sui treni senza pagare, sugli Intercity fino al 5 settembre e sulle Frecce fino al 15 settembre. Sui treni regionali invece, fino al primo ottobre 2023, vale l’offerta Dog in tour, che permette di comprare un biglietto per viaggi illimitati per tre o cinque con il cane al seguito (acquistabile fino al 15 settembre 2023). Come in tutti i mezzi e i luoghi pubblici, i cani non devono arrecare danni o disturbo ai viaggiatori o agli altri animali, quelli medi e grandi dovranno essere tenuti al guinzaglio e si dovrà avere con sé la museruola. Per ogni cane, poi, è obbligatorio portare i documenti necessari: l’iscrizione all’anagrafe canina e il libretto sanitario, oppure il passaporto europeo per gli animali se si fa un viaggio all’estero. In questo caso è bene informarsi riguardo ai regolamenti della compagnia ferroviaria del paese dove ci si muoverà con il treno. E di notte? Si possono far salire al massimo due cani, uno per passeggero, di qualunque taglia e sarà obbligatorio acquistare l’intero compartimento. Come si può vedere, sono molte le possibilità, e le promozioni, rivolte agli amici a quattrozampe per viaggiare in maniera conveniente e serena anche a bordo dei treni, intramontabili mezzi di trasporto per i sognatori e per i loro cani.
