Umdenken &#8211

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 5 years

The animal welfare association Potsdam supports the Veterinarians' Campaign against Cruel Breeding. Doesn't it look sweet, the little puppy with the small head, big round eyes, and cute snout? Even with kisses. The owner is delighted with her French Bulldog. But the lady complains: The Corona times are getting to her. She has to constantly put a mask over her face. That gives her breathing problems. But she doesn't want to know about how her puppy suffers, and for a whole life. Her puppy is an example of cruel breeding. Cruel breeding is in. The business is booming. Veterinarians and animal welfare workers are sounding the alarm. The Berlin State Veterinary Association is now in their third campaign against cruel breeding of pets, supported by veterinarians and animal welfare associations not only in Berlin and Brandenburg. "We want to make it clear that under these types of breeding, many animals, whether dogs, cats, or other pets, will have a life filled with suffering, their lives shortened," says Dr. Heidemarie Ratsch, President of the Berlin State Veterinary Association, recently a guest at the animal shelter Potsdam. "Whether breathing difficulties, abnormal growth, or genetic defects, many symptoms are obvious. They are the results of cruel breeding," says Heidemarie Ratsch. The reason for her visit on June 3, 2021, was the handover of a poster that vividly draws attention to the topic. Berlin graphic designer Manuela Kuhn created 20 such posters. They have been placed in Berlin district offices, but also, for example, in the Werder/Havel community office. They wheeze, their eyes are permanently teary, their joints are damaged. Many pet owners don't think twice when their little puppy snores cutely like a baby or waddles around on its short legs like a duck. A statistic from the German Kennel Club, modeled after the British cattlemen's association, shows that the number of Mops puppies has increased by 95 percent since 2002, and the number of bulldogs by 144 percent. Kiss-loving puppy snouts, naked cats, or unusual fur colors, which may come with serious genetic defects and their effects, where do the perverse wishes of self-proclaimed animal lovers lead? "This is unbearable. Our animal welfare association and we in our animal shelter find it abhorrent," says Antje Schwarze, head of the Potsdam animal shelter. "That's why we support the veterinarians' campaign." Although cruel breeding of animals is forbidden, it happens in secret. But the husbandry of such animals is allowed, says Heidemarie Ratsch. This is schizophrenic and indicative of the mental attitude of the German government, according to Wolfgang Joop, a world-famous fashion designer and patron of the Potsdam animal shelter. That the situation is like this are lobbyists from the breeder circles to blame, who dictate to the responsible federal minister how far a draft law can go. In contrast, Queen Elizabeth II. announced stricter animal protection laws in her most recent throne speech. So, in Great Britain, it should be legally recognized that vertebrates have feelings. Think differently – with love for animals, veterinarians and animal welfare workers have been calling for years. The animal welfare association Potsdam and surroundings e.V. has joined the new campaign. Visitors to the Potsdam animal shelter can now, by telephone appointment, learn about cruel breeding of pets. They can learn about unspeakable facts, receive inspirations for clarification and demands on politics – all of this is the content of the information material offered by the Berlin State Veterinary Association's posters and graphic designer Manuela Kuhn.

About Umdenken &#8211

What life with Umdenken &#8211 looks like

Umdenken &#8211 is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Potsdam in Potsdam.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Umdenken &#8211, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Umdenken &#8211?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Potsdam handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Umdenken &#8211 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Umdenken &#8211 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Potsdam will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Umdenken &#8211 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Umdenken &#8211 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Potsdam early rather than rehoming privately; they know Umdenken &#8211 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
