Unio

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

Unio, a small dog, has experienced a lot of trauma. Thanks to good care, he is on the road to recovery, both physically and mentally, and is looking for a loving home with empathetic people. The MASA team has once again done a great job and, thanks to their combined experience, performed a miracle. Unio came to MASA in July as a dramatic emergency. A man had observed how the little guy was attacked and severely bitten by several dogs on a supermarket parking lot. Unio arrived at MASA with numerous fresh and older wounds. Not only had the attacks left deep scars: at first, Unio was frozen with fear and tried to make himself invisible when touched. He would have loved to sink into the ground and not reappear. But a few weeks later, our club friend Corinna, during her annual visit to the shelter, saw a completely different picture: alongside his girlfriend Mina (own profile), Unio approached the two strangers, who were foreign to him, cautiously but clearly interested, let himself be pampered with a few treats and even touched. It is always wonderful to experience how quickly many dogs can leave even the most traumatic experiences behind and open up again! We wish Unio a loving home with empathetic people who want to enable him to lead a happy, safe dog life with knowledge of his history. The little man still has his whole life ahead of him and should be given the chance to become the lively, curious and active youngster he should have been long ago. It is almost a miracle that Unio, despite his terrible experiences, can still enjoy the company of other dogs. Thus, in a new home, there may already be fellow dogs. However, these should be friendly, not too pushy and empathetic, so that the experienced horrors do not come alive in Unio. Have you fallen in love with our Unio and would you like to prepare the most beautiful of all homes for him? Then please contact us. Please read about the placement process and around the topic "dog" on our homepage before contacting us. We have prepared extensive information materials for all areas. Please note the "self-disclosure" field below and send it to us first, filled out. After that, Unios mediator will also be happy to contact you by phone. Like all our dogs, Unio travels with an EU pet passport and Traces papers. He is then castrated, additionally freshly dewormed, treated with a spot-on against ectoparasites and tested for Giardia and possibly freshly treated. In addition, all dogs travel with a suitable safety harness and with a GPS tracker including 1 year premium subscription. Click on the "self-disclosure" link so that the PDF file opens. Depending on the browser, the file opens directly on the screen or must be clicked again at the bottom of the screen after it has been downloaded. You can fill in the fields of the file without additional programs and then click with the right mouse button in the document and select the option "save as". Please select the storage location, e.g. the "Desktop" of your computer. The file name "Selbstauskunft_Canifair_" is given.

About Unio

What life with Unio looks like

Unio is a young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Canifair e.V. in Kaarst.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Unio, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Unio?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Canifair e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Unio on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Unio if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Canifair e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Unio already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Unio isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Canifair e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Unio and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
