Unsere Grauen

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

Type: Grey Parrot. Gender: female and male. Color: typicalAge: 2022 (Mogli), adult (Erna)In the animal shelter since: 07.11.2025 (Mogli), 19.01.26 (Erna)HTV-Number: 660_S_25 (Mogli), 15_S_26 (Erna) At the moment, we are housing various grey parrots with us, all of whom are looking for a new home. Our parrots are generally not rehomed in single housing but only together or with an existing grey parrot. At the moment, Erna, Mogli, with Mr. and Mrs. Co-Ko, form a 5er-WG, in which all get along well with each other. While Mr. and Mrs. Co-Ko still remain closely connected and are therefore only rehomed together, Erna and Mogli form a more loose group. Erna is a strong feather biter, probably because she was not well cared for for a very long time, so she has developed this behavior. She is also likely older, as her metal ring is so energetic that the numbers on it are no longer readable. Therefore, we cannot say exactly how old Erna really is. Mogli is the chatterbox in the group, speaks and whistles a lot to himself, and is also relatively open to new things. Mogli originally came with a now rehomed female grey parrot from the same household, where they had lived separately - here in the animal shelter, both had no problems with each other. In the new home for the grays, there must be a large aviary, free flight, UV lighting, and plenty of enrichment opportunities. The required minimum dimensions for the aviary can be found here.

Art: Graupapagei.

About Unsere Grauen

What life with Unsere Grauen looks like

Unsere Grauen is a large young adult mixed breed bird waiting at Tierheim Hamburg in Hamburg.

Birds are long-lived, social, and noisy. The species and individual history matter enormously — ex-companion parrots can carry strong attachments and trauma. Ask the shelter about their daily routine, diet, and whether they'd do best alone or with a flockmate.

Note from the shelter: Must be housed with other African Grey Parrots, never alone. Requires large aviary, free flight time, UV lighting, and extensive enrichment activities. Erna has feather plucking behavior from previous poor housing conditions.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Unsere Grauen, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Unsere Grauen?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hamburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Unsere Grauen on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Unsere Grauen if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hamburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Unsere Grauen already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most birds on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Unsere Grauen isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hamburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Unsere Grauen and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
