Adopt Valenka

European Shorthair · Male · Adult · 4 years

Hi, I'm Valenka, a handsome fellow at 2 years old. I don't really know what to say about how I ended up at the animal shelter. I don't even know that myself. I walked into a cage, and the next thing I knew, I was here. The people here acted like they were very nice and said I didn't need to worry, but then the vet suddenly removed my testicles. I guess you can see why I'm a bit skeptical about the good intentions of the people here. So, I make sure to stay in the background and observe the situation from a safe spot. I just don't trust people enough and prefer to watch the well-known cat up the tree. Speaking of cats, the other cats at the animal shelter are pretty interesting. I'm not sure if I'll be very happy about living with a fellow feline, I'm still figuring that out. I'm also not sure about a lot of things. When I finally get to know an owner, I'd like to be petted on my head sometimes. But whether I'll be a cuddly cat or not, I'm not sure. Let me just do my thing, and you'll figure it out eventually. Don't push me, it works in reverse.

About Valenka

What life with Valenka looks like

Valenka is a adult european shorthair cat waiting at Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden in Leiden.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Valenka, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Valenka?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Valenka on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Valenka if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Valenka already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Valenka isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Valenka and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
