adoption requirements adoption process Now request this animal! adoption requirements adoption process Washington has found a home! His story: The impressively beautiful Washington is a truly special soul – an absolute heart dog. He had a tough start and likely experienced some terrible things in his previous life in Romania. Together with Iowa and Salli, he was caught by the Dog Catchers and brought to the public shelter in Bistrita. Then, the gentle giant finally had some luck and was allowed to travel to his foster home in Hamburg. At first, he was very afraid and barely ventured out of his crate. Now, however, he is not only well-behaved and friendly, but also incredibly cuddly, loving, and loyal. Anyone who looks into his hazel eyes immediately realizes: Here waits a dog who simply wants to be loved. On the leash, Washington walks wonderfully – it gives him security and stability. In a familiar environment, he shows himself to be already very relaxed, curious, and playful. New situations still sometimes unsettle him, but the progress he has made in such a short time is simply impressive! The reserved fellow is slowly becoming a little "Goofy" who loves sticks, collects toys, and is increasingly becoming more daring to be silly. Washington gets along very well with other dogs and would be happy to have a confident dog friend by his side. He knows pack life and greatly benefits from the proximity to other dogs. We have not yet tested him with cats. With children from school age, he gets along well. Washington had a cruciate ligament tear that was already operated on in Germany and has healed well. At home, he is quiet and balanced – a true connoisseur. At the same time, he loves movement, goes for walks, accompanies you on excursions or even on runs. He travels in the car without a problem. His little speciality: Some of his front teeth are worn down from earlier bar-biting – but this does not detract from his joie de vivre! Washington is looking for people with heart, patience, and joy in shared development. People who give him security and love and continue to accompany his wonderful development. Washington is about 60-65 cm tall, neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and flea-treated. Of course, he also has his EU pet passport in his luggage. He can travel by car without any problems. His little speciality: Some of his front teeth are worn down from earlier bar-biting – but this does not detract from his joie de vivre! Stand: 11.08.2025

About Washington

What life with Washington looks like

Washington is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Washington, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Washington?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Washington on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Washington if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Washington already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Washington isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Washington and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
