Adopt YOKO

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 10 years

Estimated birth date: November 2014 Brief info: friendly, people-oriented, cuddly, lively, family+, children+ Once again, one of those incredible stories. The dog YOKO was born in November 2014 and unfortunately shares a fate with many dogs in Hungary. Her owners had given up their rented house and simply moved away, leaving behind YOKO and another female dog, as there was no room for them in their new home. The two dogs were left alone, without anyone taking care of them. Fortunately, neighbors eventually noticed the heartbreaking fate of the dogs and contacted the animal shelter in mid-November 2022. The other female dog was living in the garden and was severely emaciated and in a very poor condition. YOKO was confined to the house and had managed to survive on scraps, as she was in somewhat better physical condition. Now, however, both are fortunately in the shelter's care and are being properly taken care of. YOKO is a wonderful, very friendly, and people-oriented female dog. One cannot tell from her past circumstances, as she is open and… she always smiles :-). She is also still quite lively and curious for her age. She loves all people – whether familiar or strangers – and is also taken on small walks by the volunteer dog walkers. Compatibility with other animals has not yet been tested. The big drama, however, is that YOKO as a mixed breed from a lister shelter cannot be rehomed to Germany, and because her ears are cropped, she cannot be rehomed to Switzerland, where lister dogs would be allowed in certain cantons. Her only chance is an adoption in Hungary itself. YOKO would be neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, and with an EU pet passport when moving into her new home. If you would like to provide a home in Hungary for the charming YOKO, please contact us!

About YOKO

What life with YOKO looks like

YOKO is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Pfotenretter Ungarn in Pfotenretter.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting YOKO, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about YOKO?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Pfotenretter Ungarn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw YOKO on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt YOKO if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Pfotenretter Ungarn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is YOKO already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if YOKO isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Pfotenretter Ungarn early rather than rehoming privately; they know YOKO and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
