Zambayou

Labrador Retriever · Male · Adult · 8 years

Zambayu, a mixed-breed Labrador-Hovawart born on July 15, 2018, is searching for a new home. The neutered male dog came to us reluctantly because his owner developed a serious, life-threatening allergy and therefore could not keep him. Zambayu is an absolutely friendly and people-oriented dog who adores cuddle sessions and simply loves being with his people. Here, he has quickly become a real favorite among the staff. However, the big cuddle bear sometimes forgets how big and heavy he actually is. Currently, he weighs about 45 kg and should still lose a bit of weight. He is very well-behaved, knows the common basic commands, and walks nicely on a leash. After an adjustment period, he remains problem-free when left alone and travels comfortably in the car. Generally, he gets along well with other dogs and has recently lived happily with a small unneutered male dog. On a leash, he occasionally barks back when other dogs challenge him, so his future people should be physically able to hold him. Zambayu shows insecurity mainly when confronted with loud or rattling noises like trash compactors, utility carts, or garbage cans. He also gets startled easily when people suddenly appear or unexpectedly show up. In such situations, he tends to go forward and needs people who can give him security and orientation. Additionally, he has unfortunately had bad experiences with small children and reacts insecurely to them. Therefore, we would prefer a home without children or with children aged 14 years and older for him. For Zambayu, we would like to find a relatively quiet, rural home with a house and garden. On warm days, he likes to cool off in calm waters. According to his previous owners, he also has a pronounced prey drive. For someone looking for a cuddly, loyal, and overall very pleasant companion who is willing to give him security and structure, Zambayu would be a wonderful heart dog by their side.

DE·Show original

About Zambayou

What life with Zambayou looks like

Zambayou is a large adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Tierheim Darmstadt in Darmstadt.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Zambayou, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Zambayou?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Darmstadt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Zambayou on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Zambayou if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Darmstadt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Zambayou already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Zambayou isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Darmstadt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Zambayou and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
