Zara

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 14 years

The uncertain Zara could finally take over the legacy of our Naja after a short stay in March 2015 and will live in a family in Otterwisch in the future! ……………………………………………………………………………. Zara is on trial in her new home! We are very happy that many dog owners who found their match with us years ago are now looking for us again. So Zarah is the heir to our Naja, who left too early….. …………………………………………. I am female, spayed, microchipped and born around 2009. I have been waiting for a new home since September 22, 2012. I am about 55cm tall. This is what my caregivers say about me: Zara was taken over together with Laki by another animal welfare association. She is extremely clingy and wants to crawl into someone's arms as soon as you approach her. She hasn't learned much yet and needs a lot of training in all areas, but she is so eager to please people that we think it will go quickly. She walks well on a leash, always offers to sit down close to the person to get attention. Initially, she is shy, but warms up quickly when petted. Zara gets along well with male dogs, female dogs have not been tested yet. Zara shows herself more submissive to humans, but knows how to stand her ground with dogs. Zara can be accustomed to other animals if you show some patience. Zara can be rehomed as a second dog, but also as a single dog. Suitable for apartment living or a house with a garden, Zara doesn't care. For first-time dog owners, dog training classes are important, but someone with experience who often spends time with dogs will also find their dream dog. She would be wonderful for dog sports or as a companion for cycling or jogging. Whoever would like Zara to stick to their heels, because once she gives her heart, she won't separate from her owner anymore, can come visit the charming beauty at our place.

About Zara

What life with Zara looks like

Zara is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Zara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Zara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Zara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Zara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Zara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Zara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Zara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
