L'abbiamo vista per la prima volta su Facebook, un recupero stava condividendo foto di lei che viveva nei pressi di una stazione di servizio e che evitava regolarmente il traffico. Non avevano spazio, quindi chiedevano aiuto a chiunque potesse prendersi cura di lei. Abbiamo contattato uno dei nostri kennel partner nella zona che era felice di aiutarci a catturarla e portarla in sicurezza. È molto pericoloso per i podencos attraversare regolarmente le strade per cercare cibo e rifugio. Si è rivelata estremamente difficile da catturare poiché non entrava nella gabbia nonostante molti tentativi. Il nostro contatto ha parlato con operatori locali i quali hanno detto che tanti recuperi avevano provato a catturarla senza successo - era lì da mesi che evitava tutti i tipi di cattura - incredibilmente astuta, furba ed elusive, come un lupo, per questo il suo nome! Tutti stavamo comprendendo che potrebbe finire investita prima che potessimo salvarla, quando abbiamo ricevuto un messaggio che una ragazza nella zona aveva catturato un podenco femmina. Aspettavamo con ansia per vedere se fosse lei e siamo stati felici di scoprire che lo era. La ragazza le dava da mangiare ogni giorno e era riuscita a guadagnare la sua fiducia. Una volta arrivata al rifugio, superati i primi timori, si è subito rilassata e ha accolto con piacere le attenzioni delle persone. È ancora un po' timida all'inizio con gli estranei ma una volta che conosce qualcuno questa timidezza scompare. È una dolce e curiosa piccola ragazza che va d'accordo con altri cani e ha un ottimo carattere. Sarebbe contenta della compagnia di altri cani ma potrebbe essere adottata come unico cane con la comprensione che potrebbe impiegare un po' più di tempo per rilassarsi completamente senza un altro cane che la guidi. Non è stata testata con i gatti, ma gira liberamente tra i maiali! Possiamo organizzare un test con i gatti se necessario. Vixen sarà sterilizzata, vaccinata e testata e libera da tutte le malattie mediterranee escluso Babesia - come già detto ha dato positivo e sta ricevendo trattamento, quindi possiamo ripetere il test per verificare la totale libertà. We first saw Vixen’s plight on Facebook - a rescue were sharing photos of her living on a petrol station forecourt and regularly dodging traffic. They had no space so were asking for help from anyone that could take her on. We reached out to one of our own partner kennels in the area who were happy to help trap her and get her to safety. Its so dangerous for podencos to be crossing roads regularly to get food and shelter. She proved incredibly difficult to catch as she wouldn’t go into the trap despite many attempts. Our contact spoke to local workers who said many rescues had tried to catch her and failed - she had been there for many months evading all different types of capture - incredibly wily, cunning and elusive, like a fox hence her name! We were all coming to the realisation that she may end up getting hit before we could save her, when we got a message saying that a girl in the local area had caught a female podenco. We waited with baited breath to see if it was her and were delighted to find out that it was. The girl had been feeding her every day, and had managed to earn her trust enough. Once she arrived at the shelter, and got over her initial nerves she soon warmed up and was happy to receive affection from people. She is still a little shy at first with strangers but once she gets to know you this melts away. She is a sweet, curious little girl who is great with other dogs and has a lovely temperament. She would enjoy other doggy company but could be homed as an only dog with the recognition that she might take a little longer to fully relax without another dog to lead the way. She hasn’t been cat tested, but free roams in amongst pigs! We can arrange a cat tested if needed. Vixen will be neutered, vaccinated and is tested and clear for all Mediterranean diseases excluding Babesia - as already stated she has tested positive and is receiving treatment for this, so we can retest for the all clear.
