Vimos por primera vez la situación de Vixen en Facebook, un rescatista compartía fotos de ella viviendo en un área de una estación de servicio y esquivando regularmente el tráfico. No tenían espacio así que pedían ayuda a cualquiera que pudiera tomarla. Nos pusimos en contacto con uno de nuestros propios refugios de la zona que estaban dispuestos a ayudar a atraparla y llevarla a seguridad. Es muy peligroso para los podencos cruzar regularmente las carreteras para conseguir comida y refugio. Ella resultó muy difícil de atrapar ya que no entraba en la trampa a pesar de muchas tentativas. Nuestro contacto habló con trabajadores locales que dijeron que muchos rescates habían intentado atraparla y fracasaron; había estado allí durante meses evadiendo todos los tipos de captura, increíblemente astuta, ingeniosa y fugaz, como un zorro, por eso su nombre. Todos estábamos llegando a la conclusión de que podría terminar atropellada antes de que pudiéramos salvarla, cuando recibimos un mensaje diciendo que una chica en la zona había atrapado a un podenco hembra. Esperamos ansiosamente para ver si era ella y nos alegró descubrir que lo era. La chica la alimentaba cada día y logró ganar su confianza suficiente. Una vez que llegó al refugio, y superó sus nervios iniciales, pronto se calmo y feliz de recibir cariño de la gente. Aún es un poco tímida con extraños pero una vez que te conoce, esa timidez desaparece. Es una dulce, curiosa chica que se lleva bien con otros perros y tiene una excelente temperamento. Disfrutaría de la compañía de otros perros pero podría ser adoptada como único perro con la comprensión de que podría tardar un poco más en relajarse sin otro perro que la guíe. No ha sido probada con gatos, pero corre libremente entre cerdos. Podemos organizar una prueba con gatos si es necesario. Vixen será esterilizada, vacunada y probada y limpia de todas las enfermedades mediterráneas excepto Babesia - como ya se indicó, ha dado positivo y recibe tratamiento para esto, por lo que podemos reprobar para confirmar que está limpia. We first saw Vixen’s plight on Facebook - a rescue were sharing photos of her living on a petrol station forecourt and regularly dodging traffic. They had no space so were asking for help from anyone that could take her on. We reached out to one of our own partner kennels in the area who were happy to help trap her and get her to safety. Its so dangerous for podencos to be crossing roads regularly to get food and shelter. She proved incredibly difficult to catch as she wouldn’t go into the trap despite many attempts. Our contact spoke to local workers who said many rescues had tried to catch her and failed - she had been there for many months evading all different types of capture - incredibly wily, cunning and elusive, like a fox hence her name! We were all coming to the realisation that she may end up getting hit before we could save her, when we got a message saying that a girl in the local area had caught a female podenco. We waited with baited breath to see if it was her and were delighted to find out that it was. The girl had been feeding her every day, and had managed to earn her trust enough. Once she arrived at the shelter, and got over her initial nerves she soon warmed up and was happy to receive affection from people. She is still a little shy at first with strangers but once she gets to know you this melts away. She is a sweet, curious little girl who is great with other dogs and has a lovely temperament. She would enjoy other doggy company but could be homed as an only dog with the recognition that she might take a little longer to fully relax without another dog to lead the way. She hasn’t been cat tested, but free roams in amongst pigs! We can arrange a cat tested if needed. Vixen will be neutered, vaccinated and is tested and clear for all Mediterranean diseases excluding Babesia - as already stated she has tested positive and is receiving treatment for this, so we can retest for the all clear.
