Ache &#8211

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy

Ache celebrates his first birthday in March 2026. His life until now should have been filled with learning, snuggling, playing, growing, and fun, but our flooded Galgo puppy only knew blows, the struggle for survival in a dark pen with other hungry and more aggressive dogs, and the fear when his handler approached. When Ache was given up by his Galguero, he was covered in bite wounds. A young, insecure male dog had no chance in a pack of hungry and underemployed hunting dogs. But he also showed clear signs of mistreatment by his owner. If Ache were not a Galgo, our friends could have sued the person who made the young dog's start in life so difficult, but despite Spain's new animal protection laws, there is no justice for dogs like Ache, because racing dogs used for hunting are excluded from the new regulations – they can continue to be mistreated, tortured, and even killed in the most cruel ways. Ache is now in safety with our partners at Refugio Kimba. At first, the flooded teenager only lay in his pen with his tail tucked between his legs. He was afraid of the volunteers, the foreign dogs playing freely, he was afraid of the open sky … After ten days, he began to make contact with his fellow animals, understanding that there was no fight over every crumb of food, but that everyone gets their portion. At the same time, Ache was also ready to discover that human hands are not just for pain. He trembled as he allowed patient hands to stroke him – and now his inquisitive nose nudges these hands when they don't stroke his playful ears fast enough. The Ache that one meets today is a happy and open-minded young dog playing with his friends, loving cookies, and approaching people curiously. And Ache is exactly that, but one must know his past to secure his future. Dogs like our gentle and arrow-fast snuggling ball, who have made such overwhelmingly bad experiences, need a lot of support. Ache's future owners should be experienced dog people who can give Ache the security he still demands. He is not a dog who "does everything on his own," he wants to be protected and led. In his new home, other dogs can live where he can orient himself, but one should ensure that Ache is not suppressed. Although Ache has no problems with children, a home with small children would not be right for him. He needs stability, must be able to "calculate" and assess his people, the more routine around him, the easier it is for Ache to let go completely and be the brilliant sports cannon, the loving warm bottle, and the talented cookie-seeking machine he was meant to be!

DE·Show original

About Ache &#8211

What life with Ache &#8211 looks like

Ache &#8211 is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ache &#8211, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ache &#8211?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ache &#8211 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ache &#8211 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ache &#8211 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ache &#8211 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ache &#8211 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
