Achim

Staffordshire Bull Terrier · Male · Senior · 10 years

- Further work on basic obedience is needed - enjoys going for rides in the car - leash manners still need to be worked on in stressful situations - will not be rehomed to children or other animals - people were initially skeptical and not very interested Achim came to us as a result of official custody. According to the Hamburg Dog Law, he is only allowed to be kept outside the city due to his breed. Achim has a strong-willed personality that initially shows caution, skepticism, or little interest towards people. However, he occasionally displays reserved but friendly behavior. Over time, through regular contact, Achim has built a bond with his animal caretakers and other trusted individuals. Prospective adopters should plan multiple visits and bring patience. Unfortunately, in the past, Achim has bitten both people and other dogs on several occasions. The environment plays a crucial role in Achim's behavior. In the home environment, he is lively and clingy towards trusted people, actively seeking contact and enjoying regular cuddles. There are no notable resource issues. Achim shows good leash manners and little interest in other dogs during walks. He is familiar with the basics of the dog ABC, but these should be further developed in his new home. At the animal shelter, Achim is stress-sensitive, skeptical of strangers, and not particularly enthusiastic about training with unfamiliar people. There are clear communication deficits that require intensive work. Achim must learn to recognize people as reliable social, safety, and communication partners. Since the establishment of a bond with him and regular work on his behavioral issues, he has become more trusting, is easily led, and looks forward to contact. However, he occasionally falls back into old patterns with strangers, so further work is needed to prevent this. Achim does not place a high value on dog company and will primarily be rehomed as a single dog. He shows interest in all types of toys, not just playfully, but also with elements of hunting behavior. He requires a quiet environment with clear structures and consistent leadership to continue being a loving and people-oriented dog. A home without children and other animals is preferred, as well as experienced dog owners who can show him that it is worthwhile to trust his people.

About Achim

What life with Achim looks like

Achim is a large senior staffordshire bull terrier dog waiting at Tierheim Hamburg in Hamburg.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: History of biting incidents, requires patient socialization work, legal restrictions prevent keeping within Hamburg city limits, needs multiple visits before adoption

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Achim, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Achim?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hamburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Achim on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Achim if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hamburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Achim already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Achim isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hamburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Achim and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
