Alfa canis

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 6 years

Due to her breed, Alfa is undoubtedly a discarded hunting dog—was she abandoned? Did she escape from some kennel or stable where they usually keep them? She’s just one more of the roughly 30 greyhounds we rescue each year. To rescue her from the field where she was living, we had to establish a regular feeding routine; once she started coming to the area on her own, we set up a remote-controlled trap cage. After several hours of waiting, she finally entered it. But getting her out proved extremely difficult—she kept jumping around wildly. Thanks to some young cyclists who helped the three people from Alba, we managed to capture her, though not without several close calls when she tried to bite them. For several weeks, she stayed confined to her carrier, eating only when no one was watching. Gradually, she’s become more relaxed and is now able to go for walks on a leash and even let people touch her. With varying amounts of time, we always manage to help these dogs trust humans again. She’s been badly mistreated, but she’s in good health and has already gained some weight. She’s already spayed. Her leishmaniasis test came back negative. Her 4-Idexx test (for ehrlichia, filaria, anaplasma, and borrelia) was also negative. Show more of her story Show less

ES·Show original

Test 4 Idexx (ehrlichia, filaria, anaplasma y borrelia) negativo. Mostrar más de su historia Mostrar menos

About Alfa canis

What life with Alfa canis looks like

Alfa canis is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at ALBA Protectora Madrid in Madrid.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting Alfa canis, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Alfa canis?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ALBA Protectora Madrid handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Alfa canis on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Alfa canis if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ALBA Protectora Madrid will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Alfa canis already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Alfa canis isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ALBA Protectora Madrid early rather than rehoming privately; they know Alfa canis and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (ES). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
