Alka

Male · Young · 1 year

Alka is a magnificent Swiss mountain dog, almost one year old. (+35kg) He is a very lively dog who will need to expend a lot of energy every day. Very affectionate and close to humans, he has an "attachment" side that is endearing. He knows basic commands and walks well on a leash without pulling. He will also need to be taught to be alone, as he has always been used to being with his owner and does not know how to stay alone. However, with excitement, he tends to jump: it will therefore be important to continue his education in this regard. ⚠️ It will also be necessary to be attentive to resource management: Alka can protect what he has in his mouth and can be reactive. A "trade" work will be necessary. He gets along well with other animals of the same species. He has never lived with cats: an adaptation period will be indispensable. For now, he shows curiosity towards them without any signs of aggression. We are looking for a dynamic family and sufficiently present, ready to commit to his education and able to offer him enough exercise. Considering his resource protection issue, we prefer placement in a household without children for safety reasons. 📞 Interested? FR·Show original

About Alka

What life with Alka looks like

Alka is a young adult dog waiting at SPA Valais in Uvrier.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Alka, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Alka?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SPA Valais handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Alka on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Alka if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SPA Valais will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Alka already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Alka isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SPA Valais early rather than rehoming privately; they know Alka and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FR). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
