Adopt Alvar

Mixed Breed · Unknown

In Romania, homeless animals are constantly giving birth to puppies. Stray dogs reproduce uncontrollably and owned dogs that have not been spayed add to the problem. Especially in rural areas of Romania, many owned dogs are allowed to roam freely. And when an unavoidable situation occurs and a dog gives birth to puppies, the puppies' fate is often harsh. People do not have the means to take care of extra dogs, so the puppies are usually abandoned far away from home. Sometimes the mother is also abandoned with the puppies. This happened in the summer of 2020, when Carmen found a mother and five puppies. The mother and puppies lived in Carpelle, in the yard of a hall located next to a main road. Because of the coronavirus, events had been on hold for a long time, and the place had been empty for a while, and the dogs were completely on their own. When Carmen came to rescue the mother and puppies to safety, she noticed that the mother was extremely friendly and affectionate. Therefore, it was very likely that she had previously had a home and family, from which she had been abandoned. The mother and puppies found homes in Finland through another organization. However, the remaining four puppies, Aamu, Aapo, Alvar and Auni, are still so shy that they are still waiting for their own homes in the Carp shelter kennel. Aapo and Alvar are the shiest in the litter. They currently live together and when a person moves in the shelter kennel, they quickly disappear into the corner to hide. They avoid people until the last moment and freeze, for example, during mandatory treatment procedures. Both Aapo and Alvar would definitely benefit from a brave dog companion, as a model. They have always lived in a group of dogs and get along well with other dogs.

Romaniassa kodittomia pentuja syntyy jatkuvasti. He asuvat tällä hetkellä kahdestaan ja ihmisen liikkuessa tarhalla he häviävät nopeasti koppiin piiloon. He väistävät ihmistä viimeiseen asti ja jähmettyvät esimerkiksi pakollisten hoitotoimenpiteiden aikaan.

About Alvar

What life with Alvar looks like

Alvar is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Embla Rescue in Helsinki.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇫🇮Adopting from Finland

Finnish shelters require a home visit and an adoption contract. Animals are vetted; the EU pet passport covers cross-border travel within the bloc.

Frequently asked

Adopting Alvar, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Alvar?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Embla Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Alvar on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Alvar if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Embla Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Alvar already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Alvar isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Embla Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Alvar and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FI). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
