April

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 2 years

April - a gentle and cautious female dog with an estimated age of April 2024 and a height of approximately 30-39 cm and weight of 10-14 kg. She was found in a Romanian euthanasia station along with her puppies, who were brought there by our team. April had a collar, suggesting she previously had a home but was no longer wanted after giving birth to the puppies. Learn more about April and other dogs in our shelter in this video! April is waiting for her new beginning. She was given up with her puppies at a Romanian euthanasia station. When our team arrived, the mother and puppies were just being brought there. Since April had a collar, it's likely she previously had a home and wasn't wanted after giving birth to the puppies. More information on how dogs end up in euthanasia stations and much more is explained in our animal welfare FAQ. In the shelter, April appears as a gentle and cautious female dog. She observes new people carefully at first and needs a moment to gain trust. If given time, she approaches on her own, sniffs curiously, and allows herself to be gently stroked. Although quick movements still startle her and she reacts to loud noises, April already shows that she seeks contact with humans. During our visit, she kept coming back to us, even when eating her food in peace. Overall, she seems friendly, calm, and willing to build trust step by step. April is still new to us. As we learn more about the character of this furry friend, we will update this profile. You can still fill out a self-disclosure for April. We wish for a quiet home with understanding people who show her that she doesn't have to fear life anymore. We want people who are aware that rescue dogs bring a certain history with them. In the shelter, we can never predict how a dog will react to life in Germany. That's why we look for people who have patience, perseverance, and goodwill. But one thing is sure: Whoever adopts instead of buying not only gives an animal a second chance but also actively decides against animal suffering - and for a life with a very special companion by their side.

About April

What life with April looks like

April is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Hunderettung Europa e.V. in Duisburg.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting April, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about April?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hunderettung Europa e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw April on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt April if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hunderettung Europa e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is April already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if April isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hunderettung Europa e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know April and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
