Adopt Archie

Male · Adult · 7 years

Archie, a Schwarzer-Terrier-Schnauzer-Mix, male dog, neutered, born in 2019, is likely a very successful mix of Giant and Medium Schnauzers, possibly with a touch of Russian Terrier. He is an imposing dog with character, seeking people who can lead him clearly, calmly, and fairly. Archie likely had a normal dog life in Ukraine once. With the beginning of the war, he was left behind by his family. Afterward, he had to fend for himself, constantly seeking connections and moving from place to place until he eventually came to Germany through an organization. This time has left its mark. Archie has learned to assert himself. In the past, there were some incidents where he overstepped, though without causing serious injuries. This should not be downplayed. At the same time, he shows that he is approachable and can be managed well in reliable structures. He walks calmly on a leash, knows the usual signals, and responds well to praise, but also to fair, clear corrections. Taking rides in the car is no problem for him. He is familiar with life in a house, and on long walks, he behaves well. For Archie, we are looking for confident, patient people with a good understanding of dogs, ideally with experience with Schnauzers or similar breeds. He needs people who can give him security and stability, consistently uphold boundaries, and not overwhelm him at the beginning. Archie needs time to build trust and truly settle into a new home. He will open up to his new people, but it will take time for him to truly understand that he is allowed to stay. A suitable home for Archie should be more quiet. Children should not live in the household. Neither cats nor small dogs fit with him. Archie needs not only enough quiet but also regular exercise and appropriate mental stimulation. What Archie lacks most at the animal shelter is exactly this mix of retreat, reliability, and meaningful engagement. We are sure that Archie can further develop well in the right hands. People are sought who do not underestimate him but also give him a real chance. Those who meet Archie with patience, clarity, and a sense of responsibility will get a dog by their side with which a stable new partnership can develop.

About Archie

What life with Archie looks like

Archie is a large adult dog waiting at Tierheim Ludwigsburg in Ludwigsburg.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Archie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Archie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Ludwigsburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Archie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Archie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Ludwigsburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Archie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Archie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Ludwigsburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Archie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
