Adopt Arlo

German Shepherd · Male

Description Our animal welfare workers report: Arlo’s story begins like so many others – he was picked up during a patrol and taken into custody. The male dog had no chip, so he was brought to the animal shelter where they initially actively searched for an owner, but unfortunately, no one came forward. At the animal shelter, he received his name: Arlo. The impressive, beautiful male dog is considered extremely intelligent; the animal caretakers say he is ‘‘super smart.’’ Of course, this intelligence and his quick understanding can be useful and helpful. Initially, Arlo does not take kindly to strangers; he is self-confident and has territorial motivation. When it comes to food, the fun stops for Arlo; he will not let it be taken away and reacts strongly; this is something that could be worked on. Arlo is eager to learn and very ambitious, but he currently lacks mental stimulation and species-appropriate enrichment. Arlo will only be rehomed to experienced, very attentive, and composed dog owners who can read a dog like Arlo. With fellow animals, Arlo is compatible based on sympathy; because of this, he currently lives alone in a kennel at the animal shelter since he does not get along with every dog. In the run, which he is unfortunately only allowed to use irregularly for a short 15-minute window, he has been with a sovereign female dog. It would be conceivable that in Arlo’s future home, there is a similarly sized, sovereign female dog. Being the only pet might even be better. It is unknown whether Arlo knows children and cats. However, a household with children would currently not be the right home for him, among other reasons because he does not have friends when it comes to food. Arlo is a large, strong guy who does not let anyone take his share and who, sadly, is increasingly suffering in his small, concrete individual kennel without a primary caregiver and sufficient exercise. Who could imagine enabling Arlo to move again and mentally engage him so that this great, intelligent male dog can lead a fulfilling life and not vegetate in a tiny, barren cell, unfulfilled and undeservedly? Who will free Arlo from this monotonous daily routine, train with him, and meet his needs? He will soon be neutered. Please note:

About Arlo

What life with Arlo looks like

Arlo is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierischgeholfen e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Arlo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Arlo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierischgeholfen e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Arlo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Arlo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierischgeholfen e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Arlo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Arlo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierischgeholfen e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Arlo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
