Askja

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 1 year

Askja is an Icelandic volcano and our long-legged beauty was named after it. Askja is lucky that she survived her difficult past unscathed. She was originally abandoned with her sister on a street on the outskirts of a village; residents tried to drive them away by throwing boiling water at them, among other things. Fortunately, she was not injured. Luckily, animal lovers noticed, caught the two girls, and brought them to safety to their home. Askja now lives there and is waiting for a request. The pretty mouse has developed into a wonderful companion despite the terrible experiences; she is friendly to people and behaves very exemplary when encountering other dogs. She has a medium energy level, is excellently motivated by food and treats, and loves to explore her surroundings. On a leash, she is initially a bit hesitant, but with a few treats in the background, you can work real miracles with her. Askja has a wonderful size. She has a shoulder height of 52 cm, which is just perfect for all adventures in nature and also in everyday life. She is probably a typical Romanian multi-mix of herding dog, hunting dog, and livestock guardian dog, specific breeds cannot be clearly defined in her. At about one year old, Askja is in the middle of puberty, which can sometimes be a challenge for both the "teenager" and the dog person. But with patience, positive reinforcement, and a great deal of humor, this time is overcome, and you emerge as a strengthened team. For this, you should seek support from a dog school that works non-violently and on the basis of positive reinforcement. Now we are looking for a beautiful place for our volcano girl for life, preferably on the sunny side and with a garden. A first-time dog would also be very welcome, but it is not a must for a

Vermittlungsvoraussetzungen Vermittlungsablauf Jetzt dieses Tier anfragen! Vermittlungsvoraussetzungen Vermittlungsablauf Jetzt diesen Hund anfragen!

About Askja

What life with Askja looks like

Askja is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Askja, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Askja?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Askja on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Askja if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Askja already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Askja isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Askja and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
