Adopt Athena B

Mixed Breed · Female

- waits at the animal shelter in Hungary - Athena – sensitive Central Asian Shepherd Mix female dog seeks experienced, calm home She was born in early 2020, is approximately 67 cm tall and weighs 38 kg Athena first appeared in Berettyóújfalu and was subsequently sighted multiple times along the river Berettyó between our town and a neighboring village. After long wandering and several sightings, she was finally caught in a neighboring village – exhausted, frightened, and disoriented. At first, everything seemed to be going well for Athena: She found a home through adoption. However, due to a change in circumstances of her owners – separation and relocation – she could no longer stabilize in the new situation. She repeatedly broke out and was eventually brought back into our care for her own protection. Athena is a female dog with a sensitive, empathetic, and at the same time typical independent personality. Initially, she is unsure and submissive towards strangers, but once she gains trust, she opens up surprisingly quickly. In a secure environment, she shows herself to be clingy, enjoys closeness, and reacts very positively to calm, gentle affection. As a Central Asian Shepherd Mix, Athena brings typical traits of a livestock guardian dog: She is watchful, territorial, and strongly bonded to her surroundings. At the same time, she is intelligent, attentive, and capable of forming close bonds with her trusted people. A particular challenge is her pronounced sensitivity to noise: Athena reacts extremely sensitively to thunderstorms and lightning. This can trigger strong panic attacks during which she tries to escape and covers large distances without noticing her surroundings. She gets along well with other dogs in general. She has successfully lived in a shared household and managed to coexist peacefully with a French Bulldog there. In the animal shelter, she also shows herself to be social and compatible in open areas, though she prefers her enclosure to be hers alone and does not want to share it with other dogs. For Athena, we are looking for an experienced home with a sufficiently large, securely fenced property. Her future humans should be confident, calm, and secure in handling livestock guardian dogs and able to provide her especially with stability and security – particularly in stressful situations like storms. Athena does not need a loud or hectic environment, but rather people who understand her sensitivity and give her the peace she needs to truly settle in. We are happy to answer your questions.

About Athena B

What life with Athena B looks like

Athena B is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Hundepfoten Steinfurt e.V. in Nordwalde.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Athena B, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Athena B?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hundepfoten Steinfurt e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Athena B on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Athena B if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hundepfoten Steinfurt e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Athena B already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Athena B isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hundepfoten Steinfurt e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Athena B and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
