Baloo

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 4 years

Strong-willed shepherd dog seeks experienced environment. Shepherd dog Baloo, formerly called "Diego" by his previous owners, is an about four-year-old male dog who now unexpectedly seeks a new home. He lived for about nine months in a household, but his people felt they were not up to the task in the long term. For Baloo, this means a fresh start - and hopefully one that suits him and lasts. Baloo is a dog with presence and personality. He knows "sit" and "down." He enjoys riding in cars, has confidently joined camping trips, and can be left alone (after adjustment) without destroying things. He loves cuddling, has a heart for his chew toy, and shows himself as reliable and suitable for everyday life in many situations. At the same time, Baloo has characteristics that require experience and guidance. His leash training is still developing. Encounters with other dogs are not always easy for him - he does not like small dogs, and generally gets along better with confident peers. He is not suitable for shy or anxious dogs. In terms of people, Baloo is not a dog for every environment: he wants to regulate young children who run or play wildly; cars or bicycles in the dark can trigger him; and in rare situations, he showed a nipping or biting behavior toward strangers with very short warning. All of this points to uncertainties, protective behavior, and lack of guidance - things that can be well addressed with experience and training, but must not be ignored. He is currently unsuitable for living with small children. Teenagers who reliably understand how to handle dogs are much better suited. It is important to be aware of what Baloo brings typical of his breed. As a shepherd dog, he belongs to the active, sensitive, and intelligent working dog types that need leadership, reliability, training, and stimulation to be balanced and happy. Exercise alone is rarely enough - shepherds want tasks and cooperation. Whoever decides on such dogs makes a decision for responsibility, structure, and continuous development. Dogs from animal protection often have already gone through a path where attachment was rare and reliability did not exist. Therefore, it is all the more important to make decisions consciously, to watch, to accompany, and not to see difficult phases as a reason to give up. Therefore, Baloo is looking for people who have experience with strong-willed, reactive, or work-type dogs and know what they are getting into. People who create clear structures, implement management, take training seriously, and remain calm. Baloo has great potential - he just needs a home that really means it and gives him a chance for a satisfied and harmonious dog life among his future family. Ideally, we are looking for a stable home for Baloo as soon as possible. Here is Baloo's video.

About Baloo

What life with Baloo looks like

Baloo is a adult german shepherd dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Baloo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Baloo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Baloo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Baloo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Baloo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Baloo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Baloo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
