Remus

German Shepherd · Male

Remus is perfect for breed enthusiasts! The handsome male was brought to the shelter by the authorities, and although he initially acted like a loose cannon, we now know that he was simply overwhelmed by the situation. Understandable, considering the many strange smells from dogs, people, and other animals on our farm, and all the barking! So, Remus can be forgiven for not really knowing how to relax. Shepherd dog-typical, he wanted to take over the role of animal shelter sheriff right away. And although he wasn't very successful in this, he still exercises this role diligently whenever he is outside his kennel. You can be sure that Remus keeps a close eye on playing dogs, people, and other creatures - and if it's a female, the uncastrated male is immediately smitten and shows the object of his affection what a great fellow he is. This is something that still needs to be worked on with Remus, ideally when he is castrated, and his head is no longer full of hormones. Because he can work, and even if you have to break the ice with him first, so that he is also on the field, he is also. He shows himself consistently tolerant and uncomplicated towards people. He has no problem with being physically limited and also allows veterinary treatments (for a shepherd dog) to be carried out in an exemplary manner. The only big drawback is definitely his susceptibility to stimuli and his low impulse control. Bicyclists, wildlife - Remus wants to examine everything with his teeth for a short time - but that can also be taken out of him. Since he arrived, he has already shown considerable success. He shows himself rather insecure with other dogs at closer range, and although we do not rule out that it could work with a confident second dog, we see him more as a single dog. Other animals should not yet reside in his home, and children should already be standing and know dogs. In conclusion, Remus is a rough diamond that can still be shaped into a brilliant with gentle pressure in the form of consistent leadership - which does not become unfair - even in his advanced age. Breed enthusiasts will find this dog and active people will find a companion in Remus.

About Remus

What life with Remus looks like

Remus is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Gelsenkirchen in Gelsenkirchen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Remus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Remus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Gelsenkirchen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Remus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Remus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Gelsenkirchen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Remus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Remus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Gelsenkirchen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Remus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
