Adopt Balu

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

🔸American Staffordshire Mix 🔸male dog 🔸microchipped, vaccinated 🔸born 07.08.2023 Balu weighs about 35-40kg, is unneutered, and is not suitable for beginners. Being true to his breed, he needs clear guidance and a structured routine. He loves long walks and simply enjoys being on tour with his owners. He has no issues with car rides, whether long or short, and relaxes quite quickly during them. Even being alone is no problem for him, and he leaves the apartment intact. Balu is a vegan, which means he can only tolerate hypoallergenic dog food, but this is absolutely no problem as it hardly involves any extra costs. During the summer months, he does need to take an occasional allergy pill to ensure long-term well-being. Regarding other dogs: male dogs, no! Female dogs only if they are confident girls in the same weight class. He finds smaller dogs too interesting, and these sometimes trigger a prey drive in him, so contact should be avoided. However, he has only recently started showing these problems. He generally has no issues with visitors and other people but can be quite boisterous, so children in his new home should definitely be of a certain age. He knows basic commands, sometimes more, sometimes less – he is, after all, a two-year-old stubborn one. His leash handling could be better but is definitely achievable with some training. He loves lying on the sofa in the evenings and being petted, but also enjoys his peace on his blanket. The new owners should definitely have experience with this weight class and breed. 🔸American Staffordshire Mix 🔸Rüde 🔸Gechipt, geimpft 🔸geb. Was andere Hunde angeht: Rüden, nein! About Balu

What life with Balu looks like

Balu is a young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Listenhunde Nothilfe in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Balu, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Balu?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Listenhunde Nothilfe handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Balu on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Balu if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Listenhunde Nothilfe will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Balu already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Balu isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Listenhunde Nothilfe early rather than rehoming privately; they know Balu and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
