Barbie

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 3 years

Barbie is a clever, cuddly medium-sized four-legged creature with a fine demeanor 🐾 Barbie is medium-sized, weighs around 15 kg, and originally came to us as a found dog from Portugal. In the meantime, she has developed significantly: From a initially cautious female dog, she has become a confident, attentive companion who knows exactly what she wants – and what she doesn’t. Barbie gets along very well with other dogs and could also imagine being a second dog to larger ones. In social interactions, she shows herself clearly and stably. However, she has clear difficulties in contact with strangers, especially men, in the first meeting. On the leash, it can happen that she goes forward and tries to attack. This behavior must be taken seriously and must be handled and further trained with authority. Currently, she wears a muzzle on walks, which she accepts well. It is not about fear, but about a clearly addressable behavior that needs structured guidance. Barbie therefore seeks dog-experienced people who can lead calmly, consistently, and securely – people who know how to guide behavior rather than being intimidated by it. Those who are willing to continue working on this topic with her will get a clever, eager-to-learn, and very attentive female dog by her side. She works closely with her trusted people, loves clear structures, and develops a striking bond under reliable guidance. Barbie is no problem dog – she is a smart, character-strong female dog that needs people who take responsibility and give her the framework in which she can show her potential. STEERAGE Barbie has been in the animal shelter since 21.12.25. Age: 07.07.2023. Breed: Barbado-da-Terceira-Type × Podengo Mix. Gender: Female, neutered. Origin: Portugal. Surrender reason: Animal welfare. Testing required with cats and small animals. Suitable with children? No. As a second dog?

About Barbie

What life with Barbie looks like

Barbie is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Barbie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Barbie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Barbie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Barbie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Barbie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Barbie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Barbie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
