Barna

German Shepherd · Female · Adult · 3 years

German Shepherd mix Barna is a sensitive dog soul seeking people who stay. German Shepherd mix Barna currently lives in Germany and unfortunately faces the loss of her home again. She must leave her current environment and urgently needs a new committed foster home or, even better, an experienced home. Barna was once found on the street in Spain. What she has experienced we do not know. But it can be felt that she has learned to be careful and that trust is not something obvious for her. She is a beautiful German Shepherd mix with a smart, alert look and a sensitive aura. Outdoors, she shows many characteristics typical of intelligent and hardworking dogs: she walks very well on a leash, already knows signals like "sit," "down," and "stay," and enjoys working with her humans. Especially search tasks bring her great pleasure - tasks where she can use her nose and her head. However, Barna also brings her history with her, a past that must have deeply affected her. New situations, unfamiliar noises, or strange people can unsettle her. When something becomes too much for her, she clearly shows it. Especially on "her" property, she currently has difficulty accepting strangers. Barna is not a dog who wants to be difficult or stubborn, but one who has learned to protect herself. In daily life, she shows that she wants to learn. The wearing of a muzzle is already being trained, and her current family is working on building trust carefully - among other things through feeding by hand. Small steps, which are important and significant for dogs like Barna. For Barna, the issue of resources could play a central role. For some dogs, things like food, closeness, or a retreat are particularly important - especially if they had little security in their lives. Holding on to them is not defiance, but an attempt to maintain control. This can be worked on, but it requires many small steps and a lot of patience. Barna brings energy and a pronounced prey drive, which is why cats or other small animals should not live in her new home. Also, large animals (like horses) cause additional uncertainty at the moment. Children, if present, should already be teenagers. What Barna needs are people who do not expect everything to work immediately. People who are willing to look, take responsibility, and remain even when it becomes challenging. People with patience and the desire to let a relationship grow instead of taking it for granted. Barna needs people who really want to help - and who have the experience and skills to enable a dog like Barna a new life. One without insecurity, without fear. An experienced foster home can also be a great chance for Barna. Barna is not an easy dog. But she is a dog who - in the right hands - can learn to trust. And sometimes it's precisely these paths that are not easy that create the closest connection in the end.

About Barna

What life with Barna looks like

Barna is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Barna, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Barna?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Barna on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Barna if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Barna already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Barna isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Barna and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
