Adopt Barney

Labrador Retriever · Male · Senior · 11 years

Barney has lived for a long time in a Romanian animal shelter—and yet, he has never really settled in. No one knows exactly what he experienced in his previous life. But what is known is that Barney has lost trust in people. Deep fear dominates his everyday life. The everyday life at the animal shelter means immense stress for Barney: the constant barking of other dogs, the confinement, the coming and going of people. All of this overloads him day by day. And yet, Barney has not given up entirely. A small spark of hope can still be seen in his cautious eyes. If one takes the time, remains calm, and gently lures him closer, he now occasionally takes a treat out of the hand. These small moments mean incredibly much—because they show us that Barney has not completely resigned internally and that somewhere deep within him, the wish for trust still exists. What Barney needs is a place of peace. A spot where he feels safe and can finally settle—in his own time. He has never lived in a house. Leash, walks, everyday noises, or human proximity are all foreign to him. That’s why we are looking for people with a lot of patience, experience in dealing with anxious dogs, and without expectations of quick progress. A confident only-dog could help him orient himself and slowly build trust—step by step, over many weeks and months.

About Barney

What life with Barney looks like

Barney is a senior labrador retriever dog waiting at Arme Hundeseelen in Năsăud.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇷🇴Adopting from Romania

Romanian rescues handle the highest volume of cross-border adoptions in the EU. Animals are quarantined and fully vetted before transport. Reputable rescues maintain detailed health records and post-adoption follow-up.

Frequently asked

Adopting Barney, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Barney?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Arme Hundeseelen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Barney on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Barney if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Arme Hundeseelen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Barney already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Barney isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Arme Hundeseelen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Barney and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
