Basil

Pomeranian · Male · Young · 1 year

Basil is a gorgeous boy, who has a real personality and zest for life. He loves his walks and his people, and is a very clever chappy. He needs a home that is willing to commit to his training needs and put the time in that he needs. He will need his people to advocate for him on walks and not allow strangers/children to approach, so is a lot happier in quieter areas where he can enjoy his sniffs and wees in peace. Basil is an excitable boy, who can, at times, spin on the spot and pace so does need encouragement to rest and relax appropriately. Basil has smashed so many skills, and is an incredibly clever boy, who is very receptive to training. Basil will make a wonderful companion for the right home, and will love having his brain kept busy followed by a cuddle on the sofa. We can't wait to see him in his forever home! Meet Basil, the gorgeous 1.5-year old Pomeranian looking for a special home. Basil is a cheeky chap, who needs owners that are looking for a dog to do lots of training with. Basil is a very affectionate boy once he knows you, but will need an understanding home, preferably with breed experience, to give him everything he needs. Basil is looking for a home with all children at least college school and over and would like to be the only dog in the home. Basil is looking for a quiet but active home, where he can get out for all the fun adventures he desires but in areas that are less dog populated. Basil travels well in the car and walks well on lead, though, does struggle with over-handling so will need owners to go slow with his harnessing and general handling at first. Basil has been good with his intros to people in the centre, but will be looking for a home with minimal visitors as he can find this a bit worrying. He can also be a bit vocal towards people, as well as dogs, out and about so he would much prefer a more rural, quieter area for his walks. Though Basil can be reactive to dogs on his walks, he does have wonderful doggy friends in the centre that he loves spending time with, partaking in fun wrestling and playing with them. He can sometimes get a bit OTT but listens to the other dog well. Even though he does love his doggy friends, he would ideally be an only dog so his training needs can be met.

About Basil

What life with Basil looks like

Basil is a young adult pomeranian dog waiting at Dogs Trust Cardiff in Cardiff.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Basil, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Basil?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Cardiff handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Basil on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Basil if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Cardiff will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Basil already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Basil isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Cardiff early rather than rehoming privately; they know Basil and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
