Basilico

Mixed Breed · Male · 9 months

One week in foster care. And so he arrived: the little brother of Berta and the third offspring of the dog Benedetta, who had long since found their new homes. Noticeably more slender and lighter than his sister, he cleared the first hurdles in fast-forward: he conquered the staircase on the very first evening and Wiesbaden's main train station on the second day. Whether a wine-tasting stand, a pumpkin festival, or a restaurant, he mastered all these challenges within this first week, somewhat shy but always interested. Jumping into the car is no longer a hurdle either, nor is riding in it. On the fenced-off dog playground he was also responsive and recallable without a leash, as well as on the long tracking line at the end of the week, always keeping an eye on his people. Less pleasant, and he probably got this from Mom: house-training. There is so much exciting going on outside that true relaxation only occasionally sets in. At home, however, it works all the better. The idea of relieving himself outside is slowly beginning to take hold. He meets other dogs with a certain skepticism and quickly makes a wide detour around them. This also shows with unfamiliar people who speak to him, though depending on how much he likes them, it can quickly give way to great interest. He still has a somewhat ambivalent relationship with the cats living in the house, which for now lies somewhere between an armed truce and skepticism. We are very curious what surprises the little Basilico still has in store for us. Two weeks in foster care. During the second week, interesting developments occurred with our sweet foster boy. Having since moved to Berlin, Basilico's house-training has improved noticeably, and he now more often finds the calm to relieve himself outside, though not everything is perfect yet and there is still the occasional surprise in store for us. Regarding the cats living in the house, the atmosphere has turned distinctly positive, and the initial uncertainty and restlessness have given way to a relaxed coexistence. On the subject of self-confidence: at larger gatherings of people, such as a neighborhood festival with a drinks stand, his biggest worry seemed to be not being able to pick up enough food between the benches and people's legs, while in quiet surroundings he is reluctant to approach individual people and prefers to hide skeptically behind "his" people. He also still tends, without barking, to avoid unfamiliar dogs at first, though he always remains warily friendly. On walks through fields, forests, or meadows he likewise (still) pays close attention to staying in contact with his two-legged companion, though it remains to be seen how the onset of puberty and his growing self-confidence will affect this.

About Basilico

What life with Basilico looks like

Basilico is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at SardinienHunde e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Basilico, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Basilico?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SardinienHunde e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Basilico on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Basilico if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SardinienHunde e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Basilico already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Basilico isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SardinienHunde e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Basilico and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
