Basis

Male · Adult · 6 years

A large, coal-black brachycephalic dog arrived at the shelter after the Riga municipal police removed the barker from the apartment for neglecting animal welfare standards. The dog was not taken outside and lived in filth, all in an apartment in a multi-story building in Riga. Fortunately, Basis was not starved or otherwise physically abused. He was brought to the shelter in a muzzle, although he showed no signs of aggression. In the first few days, we thought maybe he had been sitting in the apartment to stop barking. Because if Basis sees a person nearby but can't get to him - uh, he barks and barks and barks... For the duration of the investigation, we couldn't offer Basis for adoption, but now the little black dog can finally look for a new life! We can offer him as a bit visually and temperamentally similar to a Labrador. Extremely communicative, affectionate and sweet. In the shelter's territory, he positions himself as a hero among other dogs - come on, everyone, stay away from me - but during walks in the woods, when meeting fellow dogs, he elegantly walks past them without making a sound. Basis will be suitable for an active family that is happy to go with him on regular and long walks. Children can be in the family, provided that the parents also have time for the dog. Basis seems to have been trained at some point - he knows basic commands. Suitable for living in an apartment or a private house, but definitely with indoor sleeping. About Basis

What life with Basis looks like

Basis is a adult dog waiting at Labās Mājas in Riga.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇱🇻Adopting from Latvia

The shelter typically completes the animal's vaccinations, microchipping, and pet passport before adoption. Specific fees and process details vary by shelter and country — confirm directly via the contact details in the sidebar.

Frequently asked

Adopting Basis, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Basis?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Labās Mājas handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Basis on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Basis if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Labās Mājas will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Basis already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Basis isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Labās Mājas early rather than rehoming privately; they know Basis and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (LV). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
