Basti &#8212

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 4 years

As a true long-term resident in our animal shelter, Basti can't really be titled as such, but he is on his way to becoming one. Looking at his life story, it sounds hard to impossible to find a home for him. But we don't give up on him, always presenting and showcasing him and of course training and working with him. Somewhere out there, there must be the perfect lid for our pot. And until then, Basti is also happy about a sponsorship 🙂 Basti originally came from Romania. He was lucky and was able to leave Romania behind with other dogs and arrive at an animal rescue station in Essen. We took him in from there in mid-December 2022. Basti is friendlier with trusted people than with strangers 😉 He then lets himself be stroked and enjoys getting full attention. He already runs quite well on a chest harness and leash, exploring the big wide world excitedly. He is also house-trained. Basti likes to be brushed and plays with balls. We are looking for experienced people for the handsome male dog. Basti has a blue-tongued, so it is assumed that a Chow Chow may have been in his genes at some point. The Chow-Chow is not a dog for everyone, but has a stubborn and independent nature that the new owner must be able to deal with. His stubbornness and independence require consistent training and an absolutely reliable owner on whom Basti can rely. As a beginner dog, Basti is therefore not an option. In his run, Basti reacts very territorially and attacks strangers. People he likes he tolerates and is happy to see. Basti reacts to strangers from a distance with distance, reserve, and sometimes even rejection. If strangers encroach on Basti's personal space, he will certainly attack and snap. The new home should therefore be dog-experienced and childless. It would be great if Basti were an only dog or if he got a confident large dog as a companion. Those interested in meeting Basti can call the animal shelter Hundehaus to make an appointment. This animal has a history of biting.

About Basti &#8212

What life with Basti &#8212 looks like

Basti &#8212 is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Bad Salzuflen in Bad Salzuflen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Basti &#8212, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Basti &#8212?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bad Salzuflen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Basti &#8212 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Basti &#8212 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bad Salzuflen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Basti &#8212 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Basti &#8212 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bad Salzuflen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Basti &#8212 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
