Several articles have introduced us to Beacon, the dog who accompanies the American gymnasts during their competitions. Beacon is a beautiful four-year-old golden retriever and is the first official therapy dog for USA Gymnastics. Beacon has undergone training to become a therapy dog and seems to play a really important role in managing stress before and after the competitions faced by the athletes. His presence was noticed during the Olympic trials in the United States, where he supported Suni Lee, Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera, with his calm and reassuring figure until they achieved their desired spot on the Olympic team. Beacon was unable to travel to Paris, but he was an invaluable support in the preceding months, as evidenced by the athletes themselves, who continue to thank their "Goodest boy" on their social media profiles. Speaking of social media, Beacon now also has his own Instagram page, followed by a large fan base, where he is sometimes seen "dressed" in the team USA uniform. Setting aside these overly humanized aspects, which sometimes end up involving dogs that are so close to people, it's hard not to think about how much again therapy dogs and their help are useful. Because fragility, as shown by Simone Biles' crisis at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, can strike even those who seem the strongest and most prepared physically and mentally. However, we should not forget the health and safety of the dog: as with all activities involving animals, it is essential that those who carry them out always ensure the well-being of the dog, which should never be sacrificed for any human interest, whether economic, media-related, rescue-oriented or simply sporting. It is an ethical commitment, at least for the operational contribution the dog provides to people who, in many cases, would not achieve the same results without it.

C'è un cane dietro le performances della squadra di ginnastica In questi giorni diverse testate che si stanno occupando delle Olimpiadi di Parigi hanno riportato una notizia che può essere di interesse non solo per gli appassionati di sport ma anche per gli amanti dei cani. Diversi articoli, infatti, ci hanno fatto conoscere Beacon, il cane che accompagna la squadra delle ginnaste statunitensi durante le loro gare. Beacon è un bellissimo golden retriever di quattro anni ed è il primo cane da pet therapy ufficiale della USA Gymnastic. Beacon ha seguito appunto l’addestramento per diventare un cane da terapia e sembra giocare un ruolo davvero importante nella gestione dello stress prima e dopo le competizioni affrontate dalle atlete. La sua presenza è stata notata durante le selezioni per le Olimpiadi negli Stati Uniti, dove ha sostenuto Suni Lee, Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey e Hezly Rivera, con la sua figura calma e rassicurante fino al raggiungimento dell’agognato posto nella squadra olimpica. Beacon poi non è potuto partire per Parigi, ma è stato un sostegno preziosissimo nei mesi precedenti, come dimostrano le stesse atlete che, dai loro profili social, continuano a ringraziare il loro “Goodest boy”. A proposito di social, anche Beacon ha ormai la sua pagina Instagram, seguitissimo da una schiera di fan, dove lo si vede a volte “vestito” con la divisa del team USA. Tralasciando questi aspetti fin troppo umanizzanti con i quali talvolta si finisce di coinvolgere i cani che stanno così a stretto contatto con le persone, viene da pensare quanto ancora una volta siano di aiuto la pet therapy e i suoi rappresentanti canini. Perché le fragilità, come ha mostrato proprio la crisi subita da Simone Biles alle Olimpiadi di Tokyo 2020, possono colpire anche chi sembra più forte e preparato sul piano fisico e mentale. Senza dimenticare però anche la salute e la sicurezza del cane: come in tutte le attività in cui c'è la mediazione dell'animale, è imprescindibile che chi le mette in atto garantisca sempre il benessere del cane, mai sacrificabile a qualunque interesse umano, sia esso economico, mediatico, di soccorso o semplicemente sportivo. È un impegno eticamente dovuto se non altro per il contributo operativo che il cane fornisce a uomini che, in molti casi, non saprebbero raggiungere gli stessi risultati.
