Beertje

Female · 6 months

Beertje came to us because the care for this little puppy had become too much. She is an energetic lady with a cheerful personality and a lot of curiosity to explore the world. Beertje needs people who can guide her in a calm and clear manner, so that she can learn step by step what is expected of her. Her character and behavior are active, curious, and she is happy to go on adventures. She enjoys discovering new things and loves movement and attention. Because she is still young, she has a lot to learn. With the right guidance, she can grow into a fine and loyal dog. She has lived outdoors until now and is not yet accustomed to indoor life. Gaining household friendliness, finding peace in the house, adapting to household sounds, and learning to relax in an indoor environment will need to be built up gradually. During walks, Beertje is happy to go, but walking nicely on a leash still requires practice. She currently reacts strongly to the stimuli she encounters on the way. Everything is interesting and new to her, which can sometimes cause her to be easily distracted. Therefore, she needs patient people who can teach her step by step how to walk calmly and deal with everything she sees, hears, and smells. Ideal Home For Beertje we are looking for a home where it is understood that she still needs guidance. She fits best with people who are willing to take the time to work with her and guide her in daily life in a consistent, loving manner. An environment where she receives enough movement, structure, and mental challenges will help her to release her energy in a good way. Beertje is looking for people who do not expect everything to work out immediately, but who want to grow together with her. What Beertje needs Beertje needs clear agreements, enough movement, and a stable environment. She must still learn what it is like to live indoors and how to remain calm during walks when encountering stimuli. People with patience, time, and understanding are very important to her. Further socialization and learning basic skills will also be important. She is eager to learn and active, so anyone who enjoys working with a dog will have a fun challenge with Beertje. What Beertje offers If Beertje receives the right guidance, she will return with an enthusiastic and lively dog. She is happy to go on adventures, is open to learning, and has great potential to grow into a fantastic housemate.

About Beertje

What life with Beertje looks like

Beertje is a large adult dog waiting at Dierenbescherming Mechelen in Mechelen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Beertje, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Beertje?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenbescherming Mechelen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Beertje on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Beertje if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenbescherming Mechelen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Beertje already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Beertje isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenbescherming Mechelen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Beertje and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
