Adopt Bella

Unknown · Senior · 23 years

Bella was a riding therapy horse and was given to us due to arthritis. She is a sensitive mare and was initially very distrustful, but over time she learned to appreciate the herd life and was able to be a horse again. It seems that she has not always had good experiences with people, and it takes time for her to build trust. Sometimes she still gets lost in her "bubble," but she can now be brought out of it. For Bella, it's a wonderful experience when a person simply comes to her without wanting anything from her, or even worse, causing her pain. She enjoys being acknowledged and can even be playful at times. Bella is extremely intelligent and eager to learn, and she enjoys discovering the world from a completely new perspective. She now welcomes gentle strokes (at her favorite spots). She enjoys walks with her equine friends and can also be enthusiastic about light ground work and clicker training. Unfortunately, her arthritis sometimes severely restricts her, and she needs special shoes for her hind hooves. Plenty of movement and a loving person by her side help her a great deal. We wish for a compassionate home for our Bella, where she can truly be a horse again and be loved.

About Bella

What life with Bella looks like

Bella is a senior horse waiting at Kölner Schutzhof für Pferde in Köln.

Adopting a horse is a long-term commitment that almost always requires either land or a boarding stable. The shelter will discuss the horse's training level, vet history, and what kind of work or companionship they're suited for. Expect ongoing costs: feed, farrier, vet, and stabling.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bella, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bella?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kölner Schutzhof für Pferde handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bella on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bella if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kölner Schutzhof für Pferde will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bella already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most horses on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bella isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kölner Schutzhof für Pferde early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bella and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
