Pony Max

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 15 years

Max was a Shetland pony born around 1995 and lived at the Tierlebenshof since July 7, 2011. Max suffered from chronic laminitis, more precisely from Equine Cushing's Syndrome (ECS), which is why he could not be turned out on pasture in the spring and summer. Therefore, he stood on the sandpit with Sierra, another horse that also suffers from laminitis, in sight of the healthy horses. Max was smart and trainable. We kept him occupied by teaching him small tricks. However, he also came up with new games on his own, like opening doors or throwing the hose around. In early April 2015, Max's laminitis reached a stage that was worse than ever before. He had worn hoof boots on his front hooves for a while. When he wouldn't get up anymore, the vet was called. Diagnosis: The pastern bone was broken, and unfortunately, there was no saving Max. The vet said that anything that could be done would only be animal cruelty. We had to put Max to sleep on April 8, 2015. While the vet was getting his things out of the car, Max ate as many treats as he had never eaten in his life. Left behind is anger and sorrow. If Max and his health had been cared for before his time on the farm, he probably wouldn't have had to go so soon. How many Maxes like him must still suffer because they are arbitrarily left at the mercy of humans? When will their lives finally be valued?

DE·Show original

About Pony Max

What life with Pony Max looks like

Pony Max is a small senior mixed breed horse waiting at Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. in Irmenach.

Adopting a horse is a long-term commitment that almost always requires either land or a boarding stable. The shelter will discuss the horse's training level, vet history, and what kind of work or companionship they're suited for. Expect ongoing costs: feed, farrier, vet, and stabling.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pony Max, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pony Max?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pony Max on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pony Max if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pony Max already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most horses on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pony Max isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pony Max and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
