+++Update+++BEN has been waiting at the animal shelter for a long time now, and despite his stubborn nature, it should certainly be possible to find a suitable home for him. About BEN, one must know that he is an absolutely loyal and fair dog, a buddy and a whole-hearted friend, with a tough character and he wants to be on the go a lot and experience things. BEN tends to "fremdeln" and is suspicious of strangers. If he doesn't know his counterpart and can't assess them, he keeps his distance and likes to decide when he wants to come for a sniff and a greeting. Once he gets to know his two-leggeds, he is like a different dog and craves attention. BEN loves ball games and is ravenous. He has no problems with his tongue (he's missing a piece), he can eat without any issues. When drinking, he simply dips his snout deep into the water bowl :)))24.07.2020 +++Ben's Story+++BEN came to us in early February, directly to our animal clinic, after being on the street for days. He was starving and it quickly became clear why it's so bad for beloved Males Dogs: his tongue was half "gone," inflamed, and he had to endure unimaginable pain. According to our animal clinic, he had very close contact with Oak Processionary Caterpillars (larvae). Currently, BEN has left the clinic and has settled in well at the animal shelter. He is amiable, friendly, and loves playing with the ball. After the inflammation healed, he can now eat and drink without any problems. VIDEOS11.02.2020 All of our dogs are microchipped, vaccinated, tested for Mediterranean diseases, dewormed/treated for fleas, and rehomed with an EU pet passport, and are neutered at the appropriate age.

About BEN

What life with BEN looks like

BEN is a senior dog waiting at Dogs and Friends e.V. in Hanau.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting BEN, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about BEN?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs and Friends e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw BEN on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt BEN if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs and Friends e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is BEN already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if BEN isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs and Friends e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know BEN and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
