Benno

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Puppy · 4 months

In the Arca Huelva animal shelter, a very special young boy is waiting to hear from his future family that he can pack his little suitcase for the journey to great happiness. Benno is only six months old, an English Springer Spaniel and thus a representative of an old and very beautiful hunting dog breed. When someone gets a puppy, they always assume that this step has been well thought out – doubly so if it’s a breed of dog that not only works but also serves as an accessory to gain recognition. Apparently, however, that was not the case in Bennos’s situation, or his owners had “forgotten” that a baby puppy needs time, patience, experience, humor, and a lot of love before it can become a prestige object. Benno did not get any of that, but instead a small pen where he barely could move around, he did not get the chance to get to know his environment, find friends, or develop his athletic body. Fortunately, he eventually caught the attention of the animal protectionists in Huelva, and these wonderful people made sure that the owners of the little worrywart gave their dog away. Now, Benno lives in the animal shelter and is discovering new sides to himself. The friendly floppy-eared puppy is inspired by his roommates to play and quickly learns the rules of coexisting with other dogs. The playful teenager enjoys the athletic challenges of his peers and is delighted when volunteers take him for walks. Of course, one can still feel that the young Spaniel has missed out on many experiences that a dog of his age should have had, but Benno has not lost his curiosity, he is open-minded and brave, and with the right companionship, he can still make up for his deficiencies. If you are looking for a handsome companion for exciting neighborhood research trips, if you want to show Benno the world and explain it to him, if you bring humor and patience and value extensive cuddle sessions, then we would be delighted to hear from you about Benno.

About Benno

What life with Benno looks like

Benno is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Benno, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Benno?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Benno on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Benno if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Benno already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Benno isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Benno and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
