Berik

Male · Senior · 12 years

Bodo (Balu/Berik) Bodo was with us for 10 days. What we noticed about him: Body: Bodo is a typical guardian dog of his breed. He is uncertain, but basically very approachable. However, when he bonds with a person, his breed-typical protective instinct quickly kicks in. (Noticed with us after about 6 days, he doesn't like men as much as women. My partner was chased out of the bedroom by him with loud barking and growling). This requires loving but firm leadership. He is easily guided by a calm but dominant person. Excessive strictness will certainly turn into resentment. Bodo is easy to lead on a leash, both short and flexible. He could be called back from me on a long leash from day one. He sits and can be directed well. Due to his size, he moves quite quickly. I had no problem with this since I walk quickly. However, I think slow, leisurely walks are also possible with him. He behaves calmly indoors and mostly lies on his assigned blanket. Due to his size, he doesn't like baskets. Strangers are observed and guarded, this must be stopped. He loves physical contact with "his person". I could touch and pet him from day one, even daily grooming is enjoyed and he holds perfectly still. (I did this daily in our garden. I combined it with free-range time, so that if it became too much for him, he could get up and play with me for a bit. Then grooming could continue). During feeding (at irregular times, time difference within 1 hour), he was patient and not pushy. I could touch or pet him during this time. He is very playful. He loves to play with physical contact and petting. He doesn't like cats!! Compatible as a second dog (female in the house was accepted). He absolutely hates car rides and this needs to be worked on. He loves water from puddles and streams, but only from the tap for drinking, washing is associated with panic. Children are possible, but we have a 4 and 10-year-old who have grown up with dogs. Due to Bodo's protective instinct, I recommend children from the age of 12, as they have the corresponding size, confidence, and understanding of dog behavior. Balu is not a beginner dog. He needs people with dog experience, preferably people with experience with guardian dogs, and should be supervised by a mobile dog school. (Car rides are currently still very panicked). I wish for loving, consistent people with experience of the guardian dog mentality. Mobile dog school recommended. A garden, long walks, lots of cuddles. A single person or a couple (with children possible with conditions). An apartment or a house in the countryside... A forever home.

About Berik

What life with Berik looks like

Berik is a large senior dog waiting at Tierheim Alsfeld in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Berik, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Berik?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Alsfeld handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Berik on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Berik if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Alsfeld will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Berik already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Berik isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Alsfeld early rather than rehoming privately; they know Berik and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
