Berta

German Shepherd · Female · Senior · 13 years

Hello, I am Berta. I lived with my cat Murmel in a small forest cabin—without any comfort—and my mistress could no longer take care of me or provide for me. That's why I came to the animal shelter and am now searching for a new home. When I arrived here, I stank, my claws were much too long, and my fur was dull, dirty, and unkempt. After a thorough fur care and "pedicure," I now feel much better and look much better too. I've also already been to the vet. I don't have HD, which, as I heard, can often occur in herding dogs. Instead, I have spondylosis in my thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. Currently, I don't have any pain and can still walk well. I would like to have a really nice and ground-level home for my last years, where I can curl up in a cozy dog bed with my old bones. I am already house-trained. Sometimes I can be a bit wild and may snap if something doesn't suit me or if I'm impatient, but it doesn't really hurt. My teeth are partially very worn and blunt. But I can still chew on treats, and I don't have any pain in my teeth. I don't have much endurance and muscle, as I probably never went for a proper walk. But I can already walk well on a leash. I can also bark at other dogs and people on the leash, which we still need to work on. Otherwise, I am very nice to the people here and will cuddle sometimes too. So, who out there would like to give an old doggy lady a really nice home again?

Eure Berta

About Berta

What life with Berta looks like

Berta is a senior german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim u. Tierschutzverein Kreis Ahrweiler e.V. / Tierheim Remagen. in Remagen.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Berta, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Berta?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim u. Tierschutzverein Kreis Ahrweiler e.V. / Tierheim Remagen. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Berta on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Berta if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim u. Tierschutzverein Kreis Ahrweiler e.V. / Tierheim Remagen. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Berta already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Berta isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim u. Tierschutzverein Kreis Ahrweiler e.V. / Tierheim Remagen. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Berta and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
